Great gym! I only wish it was bigger. Can get quite busy in the evenings. They have certain member only hours (9-12 on weekends, during the school year 5-9 T, W, TH) that are great if you're a member but a hassle if you're not as it limits when you can go. Definitely gets quieter in the summer as people head outdoors to climb. They have a good upstairs area with weights, mats and hangboards. Lots of interesting problems that are graded by their own hex system, a 1-6 difficulty rating system. I found staff and everyone to be quite friendly with a variety of levels. Change rooms are always clean and they even have a foot shower where you can wash your feet after your shower. It is fairly expensive, but I think that's just Vancouver prices. First Monday of every month is half off for students also!

I expected more for the price and the hype. It's a medium sized place with an acceptable variety of wall angles and route styles and difficulties. Locker rooms and setting is pretty decent. Didn't check out the training upstairs or around the back, so can't comment on that. The slide is a nice little touch. The grading should be expanded a little more: there were problems on the very far ends of easy 2s and 3s, and hard 2s and 3s. I would recommend, but I'm disappointed - it's nothing that special to any other decent bouldering gyms.

Very bad experience, would not recommend for a one-time visit while traveling. Over-crowded with dangerous gym lay-out/setting if you want to try hard/are coming to really climb. The climbers here don’t respect space and the setters set routes with crux moves as if there isn’t 5-10 oblivious people below you. Many people have mentioned tight spaces, which is what it is, but you don’t have to set a comp style finish on a V6 with a 5ft landing area that you know will have 5-10 people gathering?! I would recommend some serious upgrades to gym function. Background: I’m a V7-8 gym climber and travel for work hitting gyms along the way. This was my worst experience at a new gym. Booking system, 2hr block not a day pass, liquid chalk, 3 people standing on a soaking wet urinal floor in climbing shoes in the span of changing, the grading system (come on, it’s so lazy to set 1, 3, 5, 7; use the full grading system). Oof. Constructive criticism: The general population really needs a refresher on where to sit, how not to move/be under climbers, and how and where to queue. The instructors were letting small children fly everywhere (that was a huge surprise). I’d have a mandatory 2min refresher for every climber that checks in for a month to fix these problems. Please reinforce the bathroom climbing shoe problem with severe consequences. Disgusting. I’d suggest tape or lines outlining where a good place to sit is. For example, the small low-top out middle section becomes tight, with folks giving the big wall slab space. You have to tell multiple people to move just to climb this section (no one moved if you started climbing). Provide guidance. I think the spray wall is in a very bad place. No one climbed it while I was there. Use that real estate for problems since there is a lot of space between walls. Move the spray wall to the back, where it’s more empty. The cave V5+ routes all had dynamic comp style finishes. Setters, they looked so rad, but I just couldn’t throw for anything safely because there was a crowd that didn’t understand bad swings. Just overall a shame today. I think everything I brought up really can be fixed with good management. Best of luck!

The Hive North Vancouver is an exceptional climbing gym. It’s clean, well-maintained, and creates a welcoming environment for climbers of all levels. The staff are particularly outstanding—polite, professional, and always ready to help, which makes the overall experience even better. That said, one area for improvement is the parking facilities. Currently, there are no designated handicap parking spaces in front of the gym, which is a significant oversight. Providing accessible parking is essential to ensuring inclusivity and supporting the needs of individuals with disabilities. Despite this issue, The Hive remains a fantastic gym, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a great climbing experience in North Vancouver

Pretty pricey gym to go to for a one off compared to other cities we visited! However all the staff are super friendly, and ensured we were given an orientation to make sure we knew how to be safe on our visit. As regular climbers it was odd to be restricted to liquid chalk only, although they did lend us some which was nice! I will say that I'm not sure if it was due to the chalk or the cleanliness of the holds but we found all the holds almost frictionless, meaning that a lot of the climbs felt super sketchy when trying a committing move near the top! This wasn't helped by the fact a lot of the other climbers weren't very aware of their surroundings, often I had to warn someone as they moved underneath where I was climbing.

We had a wonderful birthday party at The Hive today. For twelve 11-12 years old boys to have fun and stay safe climbing is no easy tasks. Appreciated having 3 instructors for the 12 boys. They accommodated the late guests and gave safety instructions all the same. They directed games which the boys enjoyed. The party room is a bit small as it has its own climbing wall. But the boys had lots of fun! Thank you for a great experience!
