Constructed in 1887 on a rock formation resembling a giant tortoise shell, Turtle Rock Lighthouse once served as a navigational aid to ships transporting anthracite coal along the Schuylkill River from upstate Pennsylvania to Philadelphia. Originally powered by gas, the light was automated in 1990. Today, the lighthouse is operated by the Sedgeley Club. A social club located in the historic Boathouse Row.
