**A serene spiritual retreat in the heart of Kottayam.** Kottayam Shiva Temple is not just a place of worship — it's an experience. The moment you step inside, you're greeted by an overwhelming sense of peace and timelessness. The temple architecture beautifully reflects Kerala's heritage, and the well-maintained premises add to the charm. Evenings here are especially divine, with the sound of temple bells, soft chants, and a gentle breeze that feels almost sacred — perfect for quiet reflection. The priests and staff are respectful and maintain the sanctity of the place. Whether you're deeply spiritual or simply looking for a peaceful stop during your day, this temple offers a kind of inner calm that's hard to find elsewhere. Highly recommended if you're in Kottayam — even a short visit can leave you feeling recharged and grounded.

Dedicated to Lord Shiva, Thirunakkara Mahadeva Temple was constructed by Thekkumkoor Maharaja in the early 16th century. The Mahadeva Temple showcases typical South Indian architecture. The walls of the temples are decorated with beautiful paintings of different scenes from the Hindu epics. The innermost sanctum of the temple is adorned with impressive images of epic characters from Hindu mythology. The whole temple complex occupies about 4 acres (1.6 ha) of land which is rich in many trees and plants. One of the largest Koothambalams in Kerala is in this temple situated in the southeast corner. The two-storeyed main temple or Sreekovil is very attractive and it is adorned by a golden finial.

The temple situated in the heart of Kottayam city is built in the traditional architectural styles of Kerala. The first entrance to the temple includes a small temple for lord Ganapathi which was built recently. After crossing the entrance, we could see the big ground leading to the holy steps of the temple. The two storeyed square shaped sreekovil of temple is very attractive and it is adorned by a golden Finial. The sreekovil includes three separate rooms, one in the west is Garbhagriha which has the Shiva linga idol installed. An idol of Parvathi devi made up of Panchaloha is also installed next to it.
