The Tropicana just reopened a few months ago after an extensive renovation. The common areas are lovely - beautifully decorated and very serene. The location of the hotel is great - just a minutes walk to the town square and with multitudes of restaurants and shops all around. But the best is the employees we encountered- KEVIN, GERARDO, SAMUEL, and ERICK who went out of their way|to be of assistance. ||This was a last minute booking done through the Hilton website and we booked a rate for “NEW HOTEL AND $50 USD credit” which included an “upgrade where available”. We did book the lowest room type available because we saw on another travel websites that displays numbers of rooms left that there was plenty of availability and this was just the night before so we were taking the chance that an upgrade would be given and we also hold the top level in the Hilton loyalty program. ||At check in we were denied an upgrade as the front desk manager said we could only move one category up room to the “double deluxe” room which she said was not available. I did pull out my phone and show her that the Hilton website was showing the double deluxe room as available for the nights we were staying. She said that was wrong- there are only 2 rooms designated as “double deluxe” and they were occupied. She did offer to upgrade to the next room type (King with terrace) for $130 USD per night and then. If we would have booked this room type from the get go it was a $95 difference per night. She then offered the rate of $80 per night. Out of principle we declined this and asked her to check with someone to see if there was anything else that could be done. We were informed she would do that and notify us. After 45 minutes of waiting in the room assigned to us we had heard nothing. We decided to go out exploring and ran into the same manager who said “Oh, yes- we can’t do anything “. Not sure if she was planning to ever inform us of this or leave us hanging. ||So now to the room- the entry level room (2 double beds) is extremely small. With 2 of us with only a carry on and backpack each we were maxed out for space. The windows open onto a common walkway so if the curtains are opened anyone can see into your room. The lighting in the room is very dim- actually it is depressing. |The bathroom is also tiny. Though there is a fan it was not very efficient. After a few minutes of the shower running the smoke detector went off. The front desk responded promptly to the alarm- calling and sending someone up. We were told to open the windows in the bathroom. This would have to be done by climbing atop the toilet- see pic. ||The complimentary Diamond/Gold continental breakfast is served on a nice terrace. The presentation is very nice. Choice of fruit or juice, coffee or tea, and pastry or bread. The second morning of our stay we opted to have this inside at the restaurant as it was chilly out-we were previously told we could do this. This was confusing for the inside staff and we ended up having to pay for the breakfast. Food in general was ok/ nicely presented but not the most tasty either the exception of wonderful guacamole. ||A very nice extra the hotel provides is complimentary activities. Yoga, city tours, bike rides, cooking classes, and spirits tasting. We took part in the mezcal tasting given by Nancy and Gerardo- very informative and nice experience and the downtown tour with Kevin- also did a great job. ||There were more employees than guests at the time of our stay and we were told by one employee that occupancy was in the teens. ||This has the potential to be a very nice option in San Jose del Cabo- with a little more attention to providing a better guest experience it could be that. And for those planning a stay here don’t expect anything for being diamond.||P.S. The rooms with a terrace had a single chair - no table or 2nd chair- not conducive for sitting out on the terrace enjoying a beverage or conversation with their...
Read moreThey were quite a few problems with this hotel it doesn't match the price point of what was charged. One thing is one day we order tacos and literally needless to say Three of us order tacos in each different taco order we're all horrible. I ordered pork belly tacos. The person that cooked him should be forced to eat them. Pork belly has to be cooked to the point where the fat is crispy this person failed and just left blobs of fats with low quality chewy meat. My friend had some kind of tempura battered vegetable tacos they were needless to say god-awful. My cousin had fish tacos and they were small for the price point. Do not eat here do not drink your drinks or frightfully frightfully frightfully expensive. Another problem with this hotel is that they don't have refrigerators in the regular rooms. Give me a break. Also the swimming pool was hot as Hades. There was nothing to cover the pool and we were there in the month of August and the swimming pool was basically a hot tub Potter even than the actual jacuzzi. It was miserable and people didn't use it. They should a put air conditioning coils in the pool or b invent some kind of covering that prevents it from hitting the sun in direct sunlight. For all intensive purposes that swimming pool was unswimmable. The staff was professional but I would never ever stay there again with so many faults. To call that place the Hilton shows the Hilton in a bad light. How can you charge an amenity fee and not even have a refrigerator in the room give me a break. Also water drains slow in all pipes. Internet was fine I would never buy a drink there they were outrageously expensive. To keep my things cold I had to buy an ice chest and stuck it in the shower. I had to empty it every day and put new ice in to keep my cream cold. Another problem with a hotel is they offer free coffee but only till 9:00 a.m. who the hell wants to get up before 9:00 a.m. to get a cup of coffee. I think it was a money saving technique on their behalf. They also gave me an ice chest to use as ice but the container that they gave it to me wasn't clean was I supposed to put that in a drink? Gross!! Definitely not up to Hilton standards and not at a price point more than $70 total. Their idea of happy hour is 14 or $17 margarita buy one get one free. Insanity I would never pay that much for margarita. I like the art but this hotel is...
Read moreMy companion and I loved our week here. It was such a great alternative to the ubiquitous all-inclusive resorts that comprise so much of Los Cabos. It was liberating to be able to choose when and where we wished to dine, although we dined frequently at the Tropicana restaurant itself. The staff, from front desk and porters to housekeeping and F&B, all made us feel welcome and valued. No request was too difficult. Our room on the top floor overlooking the pool, was comfortable and kept very cool with effective AC. Although not overly large, it served us well and offered enough closeet space and drawers for our wardrobe. The only thing it lacked was a mini refrigerator in the room and a second chair on the balcony. The shower had good water pressure and constant hot water. Robes were provided, which was a nice touch. Daily housekeeping and evening turndown service provided fresh towels and as many glass litre bottles of drinking water as we wished. The pool was very pleasant, never busy during our off season July visit, and plenty of comfortable loungers with towels. There was a bar and a game room off to one side should one have wished to escape the strong sun. The entire pool area was adorned with iron statuary artworks and mature trees which added to the ambiance. The location was perfect. We walked everywhere: to restaurants, boutiques, bars, the Oxxo, even the gym. We would take an Uber to the Playa Costa Azul, a short trip by car, but a bit circuitius on foot, then spend a couple of hours on this beautiful stretch of beach. A quick ride back to the hotel, and we'd enjoy cocktails by the pool. I would highly recommend visiting, especially when much of Mexico is enduring their rainy season. The only thing missing is an on-site...
