I've live in San Jose and have gone twice to Herradero. First time had grilled fish and it was delicious! Also only 240 pesos, this was off season last year.
Went back last night with friends. It was very busy with an older crowd, Americans and Canadians. Prices have risen dramatically in 6 months. Average dish was close to 400 pesos!
We ordered tortilla soup, arrachera fajitas and chili rellanos with steak. Also house waters and diet cokes. Waiter returned with 3 bottles of Fuji Waters, which we immediately returned. Then our food started arriving.
My tortilla soup was the smallest bowl I've even gotten and very mediocre. Loaded with chips, little bit of avocado and no chicken. Broth was gone in 10 spoonfuls. All that for 160 pesos, pathetic.
Arrachera fajitas not much better. Small smear of beans, guacamole and the steak pieces would fit in your hand. 395 pesos.
Chile rellanos were huge, came with rice and two rellanos. However flavor was definitely lacking and the steak, blah. 395 pesos.
San Jose has so many wonderful restaurants. Do yourself a favor, save your taste buds and pesos and...
Read moreJust returned from San Jose for our 10th trip. Have dined here at least half of those trips. All have been amazing except this recent stop. We had a party of 8, like always and ordered our usual of queso x2 and ceviche. About half of us had drinks and everyone had an entree but our bill was just shy of $340 for that. Bottled water is now seemingly Fiji only and $5 per pint bottle...$40+ in water alone. The food is still overall decent but my quesadilla was dry and disappointing, my wifes surf n turf was more bell peppers and large chunks of onions than steak and shrimp and the ceviche didnt taste fresh or flavorful. Our friends also agreed things arent as good as we've had every other visit. We realize alot of places are trying to make up for Covid shortfalls but what was once one of our favorite go-to's for affordable, local comida and great margaritas seems to be heading in the wrong direction. We will probably give them one more chance but we all feel like they need to step up the food quality back to their old ways and remember they are still a local favorite that should have...
Read moreMy wife and I, each, chose the Fish Fajitas for lunch. The fish was soggy, not fit for a fajita meal at all. The salsa tasted like it was a left over from the day before and ...... We were given only three tortillas for both of us.
The fajitas did not include guacamole which in my opinion is staple as part of a fajitas meal.
I asked for the guacamole and more tortillas, and by the time the guacamole (and no more tortillas) was served, we had finished our lunch.
We were very disapponited, specially since the meal was part of a city tour and the tour company chose that restaurant.
I'm a Spanish speaking Mexican American, I think I know what salsa and fajitas should be. My comments to the waiter, who seemed to be part of the restaurant ownership, did not seem to do any good.
Needless to say, no...
