Plaza Mijares is the heart of San José del Cabo and a must-visit if you’re in the area. It’s a lively public square surrounded by historic buildings, shops, restaurants, and cultural spots. We spent an afternoon here during our trip and always found something new to enjoy.
The plaza has a very family-friendly atmosphere during the day street vendors, shaded benches, and open space for kids to run around. In the evenings it really comes alive with live music, food stalls, and locals mingling with tourists. One of the vendors mentioned coming in on a Thursday night for the weekly Art Walk—galleries open late, artists line the streets, and the whole area feels festive.
A few tips for first-timers: • Parking: Street parking is limited, but there are paid lots nearby (much easier if you don’t want to circle around). If you’re staying nearby, walking is the best option. • Safety: The plaza is very safe and welcoming, with police presence and lots of families around. • Food & Drinks: Plenty of restaurants and cafes line the plaza. Great for people-watching while you eat. Some are pricier since it’s a tourist hub, but you can find casual taco spots just a block or two away. • Culture: Don’t miss the historic Mission San José del Cabo Church, located right on the square. It adds a nice cultural touch to your visit. • Shopping: Vendors sell crafts, jewelry, and souvenirs, though bargaining is less common here than in bigger markets.

The lively central square is beautifully decorated with trees, monuments, and striking buildings, making it the perfect place to start your tour of the city. The plaza is also a hub for cultural events, including concerts and dance performances. One of my favorite events is the Art Walk, which takes place every Thursday evening between November and June. During the Art Walk, you can stroll through the Gallery District, visit art galleries, sip wine, and dine in local restaurants. It’s a wonderful way to experience the local art scene and culture. I highly recommend visiting Plaza Mijares and attending the Art Walk if you...
