It was finally the day of our balloon trip in the desert. All excited we had to lay early, so once on the tour we won't be sleepy and can feel everything what was happening around. When it was the pick up time, we were greeted by Mr. Abbas, our driver, in the hotel entrance. There were other people in the bus and the bus was nice. He was very polite, charismatic and a real professional. We were getting ready for our long trip to the place where all the magic happens. It was misty, quite foggy, which made me a bit skeptical about the flight early in the morning, nothing to see on the road. Everyone layed back and remained in seats until it was the time to go out. The road was coming to an end, the bus was hitting sand and we could see some work going on in the launching site. We exited and as soon as we did stars looked down upon us, greeting and cheering. Regrouped, we followed our driver who invited us for morning arabica coffee and offered us dates to warm up before the flight. After we had a quick instruction how safety works and how to properly and confidently wear belts once inside of the balloon. Light almost hitting the horizon and everyone noticed that something is started to happen with laying balloons. We moved closer and stand near one of our balloon space ships :) The whole thing of blowing in hot air inside of the balloon was very thrilling because we weren't alone, there were other groups with sky cruising ships as well :) Sun have just raised enough above magic dunes to show its waves far away and the whole valley was slowly starting to be covered with light. Thin layer of fabric began to form into one big mass of a powerful thing able to lift up to 20 people. After some time, when light firmly settled on the skyline we had to quickly get inside the basket :) One more instruction and we started to take of the sand! It was very calm and the fire serenade followed us throughout the whole journey. Flight have started with our brave captain who knew confidently what he was doing. Besides stunning views we were diving in skies near settlements like villas and closed gardens. Our captain was circling the basket so everyone can enjoy the whole trip and take mesmerizing photos / videos. Landing was quite nice, we weren't jumping and didn't even tilt. Some time later we switched to different vehicles and had a short dunebashing towards the parking where vintage land rovers were expecting us :) Mr. Abbas helped everyone and the drive has started with him happily yelling: "Dunebashing time!" :) In the camp we were greeted with a authentic hand sanitizer :) Breakfast included different kinds of cooked eggs, some soups, cold / hot drinks. Before leaving the camp we had much time to enjoy taking photos with the falcons and riding camels. I met and had a very nice conversation with Cornee, a falconer who were there in the camp holding a real falcon on his hand. Overall experience was nice. Personally I love early morning things, it is kinda...
Read moreThis activity was fun but definitely not for everyone. If you're scared of heights, have mobility issues, pregnant or recovering from an injury, stay away from this activity. They do warn you before the flight that it isn't intended for everyone but I didn't understand how important it is to follow these rules until after the experience.
First, I want to mention there is a private transfer option available if you need it, you just need to contact them via whatsapp to arrange it. It's $200 AED each way. My partner and I needed to skip the breakfast portion after the ride so we opted for a private transfer back home.
Your driver will come to your hotel and pick you up from your lobby at a time early in the morning (for us it was 3:45am), you cannot be late because they run a tight schedule and need to pick up other guests. Dress warm! It is chilly that early in the morning. When you arrive at the site (about a 45 minute drive) they offer you arabic coffee and dates and you watch a drone show. The show is nice and not too long.
You get to watch the balloon inflate and then you get on. Getting on is tough because there are no doors so you need to use the foot holes in the basket to climb and prop yourself over. The actual ride takes about an hour, it was foggy the day we went so we didnt get a clear view of the sunrise but it was pretty regardless. It's a shame that you still pay full price even if you don't get to experience the sunset, I understand this is out of their control but they advertise this experience heavily reliant on the sunrise, so if we aren't actually seeing the sunrise I would have liked to see some sort of discount.
Landing was a different story, the balloon hit the ground hard and we were sliding along the ground for about 20 seconds while on our backs, people were screaming. We were told to hold onto these handles before take off so that in case a landing like this happened we wouldn't be flailing around the basket and falling out.
It was a fun experience, despite the landing. I actually kind of preferred that landing over a regular boring one. It's a story to tell now!
I wouldn't do this experience again because once was enough, experiencing a hot air balloon ride I feel is a must at least once - and here is a good...
