Great afternoon spent here. Good place to come when weather is foul. Has a bookshop and tearoom within the same building. Toilets are also here. Especially impressed with staff who were happy to inform us of the local history of the building and characters associated with it, a very good rapour with us. A surprising variety of artefacts found in each room, images taken. Was particularly interested in the train information associated with Lavenham and surrounding area. Great place to take pictures of such interesting things. The small tearoom is located to the left of the building and you can eat in or out. Do take time to look at the tearoom gardens as a nice place to sit and eat in. Have included some images of the gardens. Yes definitely a place l will revisit again. As regards parking there is some street parking, but it is a popular location and is often busy with tourists. Small car park can also be found further down the road. Guess what it is actually free!!! Well done for NOT cashing in on your...
Read moreLavenham is the best preserved medieval town in Britain. Once you enter the town centre almost every building is 500 yrs +. The Guildhall is a large and prestigious building in the Market Square, the town was awarded Market status . The property is run by the National Trust. There are 2 rooms to view downstairs with tales from past residents about life in Lavenham. Further rooms upstairs. I left by the back of the building towards the cafe ,through a pretty garden, which included a knot garden and enjoyed a pot of tea and a slice of bread pudding! Lovely. The whole town is so worth a visit. I also visited Little Hall, another fascinating building and it's story was told by a knowledgeable guide. I will go back as I only saw some of the town in the time I had. Lovely views of the pretty rolling countryside as stand at the top of the hill in the Market Square looking down...
Read moreOne of the smaller national trust properties, but still worth a visit. Especially as the whole of Lavenham is an architectural time capsule and always worth a stroll around. The guildhall has the usual small gift shop and a pleasant cafe which are free to enter. Once you have paid (or shown your NT card) you can wander round the mostly empty ground floor, then head upstairs for some interesting but fairly eclectic artefacts and interpretive displays about the history of the building and the surrounding village. Don't miss the outside herb garden and the tiny jail and mortuary. There's supposed to be a cellar you can visit, but it's always been closed when I visited. In summary: if you are not already a member the entry price might be a bit steep given that you can enjoy the rest of Lavenham for free, but if you are a member it's a...
