Great little museum laid out over two main floors with some further exhibits within the stairwell. Clearly displayed objects with written information cards relating to each cabinet and its collection. Kept us busy for an hour and a half. We had plenty to discuss about the collection, made new links and connections relating to prior knowledge and understanding. There are some family activity sheets to engage children but overall I would suggest this museum is most suited to adults and older children who will walk around calmly and observe/chat; perhaps also suited to small visiting school groups with a specific area of interest and guided/adult led activities. This is due to current lack of other hands on/interactive activities and also space constraints given that the collection is held within a house rather than a purpose built display space thus room is somewhat limited. The shop has many interesting items related both to the collection and larger Asian culture. Talking with staff, there are plans to explore ways in which to bring the collection to life and made more accessible and engaging for a younger audience through focused and fun activities. There is a lift, toilet, seating within the rooms and also folding seats for use in the rooms housing the collection (sketching, note taking, contemplation). I would visit again as part of a larger itinerary for a...
Read moreA lovely museum with incredible exhibits; however, my experience was interrupted by a member of staff who insisted I come out of the top floor gallery so she could give myself and two others a tour of the same room we were already in. A tour I had not asked for and made clear by body language that I wasn't interested in. She then proceeded to talk through artwork I had just looked at and recounting facts I had just read. I felt annoyed and patronised.
The time I had left to my own devices was much more enjoyable and the collection is great. Just a shame about the...
Read moreA nice museum with artifacts from East Asia. At the time we went they had a separate section dedicated to Dragons to mark the ‘Year of the Dragon’ according to the Chinese calendar. The museum staff and the volunteers were extremely enthusiastic, knowledgeable, helpful. They even offered us to keep our backpacks with them while we explored the museum. At the time the entrance ticket for students were under £4, which is extremely worthy given the history and artistic value of the place.
They have a shop by the reception, and a toilet in the...
