If you’re visiting Belfast or the north, I’d encourage you to spend some time viewing the murals on Falls Road and surrounding areas, including the Bobby Sands Mural. £40/person is worth hiring a Black Taxi guide that knows the city and can show you the sights. I suggest going through a company that guarantees a non-bias historical tour so you can see both sides of the wall and get the most accurate understanding of the Troubles if you don’t already know yourself. You can also just go see them for yourself for free. If we can all better understand what the people of Belfast went through, how far the city has come since the Peace Agreement, and also just how fragile peace can be, I think it gives us a better understanding of our own cultures and where we fit...

There is so much Hope, in the people whose faith was so tested by the violence, "the troubles" of the late sixties, seventies and eighties. Falls road, The Bobby Sands mural (and other images)of the martyrs of a terrible and unjust time, are a prayerful reminder, not just for Catholics, but for all of Belfast and the North to work for a continuous Peace and Justice. These murals, these Walls are an honoring shout out for peace on this busy street, and this Shrine, these Walls, ever a reminder to diligently continue efforts and hard work for peaceful resolutions to resolve differences...the price we pay, the harm and death our children and theirs, and of our own souls is too high. Peace...

Photograph of Bobby Sands Mural. Painted in 1998, this mural depicts the smiling image, often considered iconic of IRA leader Bobby Sands. Sands led the hunger strike while imprisoned in the H block of Long Kesh Prison. The smiling pose is based upon a photograph taken of him during his imprisonment. The mural is painted on the Sinn Fein political party. Sands was elected to UK parliament during his interment, yet he never served as an MP because he died in prison from the hunger strike of 1981. The mural displays two phrases "Everyone A Republican or Otherwise, has their Own Particular Role to Play," and "Our Revenge Will Be The Laughter Of...

Interesting experience. In the main tourist neighborhood in downtown Belfast you would never suspect there is still sectarian tension from the Troubles, but a visit to the murals and the gates in the fence that divides the Loyalist and Republican neighborhoods of Belfast that still close daily and you can feel there is still lots of healing left. Difference in murals from protestant/Loyalist to catholic/Republican side are interesting. Well worth the visit.
