A day in Berwick-upon-Tweed feels like stepping into a storybook, along the Northumberland coast, this charming town offers a blend of history, scenic beauty, and a warm, welcoming atmosphere. Strolling atop the Elizabethan town walls, you get to enjoy panoramic views of the coastline, the River Tweed, and the town’s historic architecture. The cobbled streets lead to cozy cafes, art galleries, and local shops, each with its own charm.

A visit to the iconic Berwick Bridge, and the nearby beaches, with their golden sands and soothing tides, make for a perfect retreat. Berwick offers a day of relaxation and discovery that lingers...

The Berwick walls are absolutely fantastic to walk – one of the best-preserved examples of Elizabethan defences in the country. You can do a full circuit in under an hour, and it gives you brilliant views over the town, the River Tweed and out to the North Sea. Along the way there are bastions, gun emplacements and plaques explaining the history, so you really get a feel for why Berwick was so strategically important. It’s all free to access and very easy walking on well-kept paths. A must-do if you’re visiting the town, whether you’re into history or just want a pleasant stroll with...

Fabulously preserved walls with easy access. We joined the walk at the end of Woolmarket and the route was well signposted with lots of information boards. The paths were level and well kept and there was no litter. From this vantage point you could see into the flanking bastions and get an idea of the fields of fire of the guns as well as the defences. We walked the route over an afternoon and then early morning but a couple of hours would be plenty to...

It the wall around the city of Berwick. It must be quite old and show the protection walls around the wall. It requires a long walk to cover it and many bill boards provide information about the barracks. It may have been used even during the great world wars. The best way to walk and see the whole thing is to follow Lowry's trail as attached. The best place to know it's history is the main guard exhibition.
