I want to write an extensive review of this park because there are so many features worth mentioning. I had the pleasure to spend a windy but sunny winter morning in this expansive park, which is a haven for nature enthusiasts and families. It is well-maintained with plenty of litter bins and dog waste bins scattered around. The park offers clear walking and running paths. Numerous benches are scattered throughout, providing perfect spots to relax and a welcoming escape. The family-friendly environment is evident, with easy access from multiple entry points and a fairly big car park by the Holly Road entrance. The lush greenery and big lake by the Hamstead Road entrance, populated with geese and other birds, enhance the park's natural charm. There is another, smaller, lake by the cricket ground. For children, there's a well-equipped playground that promises hours of fun. Sports fans will appreciate the basketball, football, and cricket grounds available. Additionally, the park boasts vibrant murals that add a splash of color and creativity to the surroundings. There's also a mile-long blue walk line, designed to help and encourage people to lead a healthy lifestyle, perfect for a leisurely stroll or an invigorating jog. There's one drawback: the lack of public toilets. This can be a bit inconvenient for visitors, especially those with young children. I believe there are some in the leisure centre but if it is close, you won't have access.
Overall this park is truly a place that enriches the lives of the local communities and reminds us of the beauty and tranquility that...
Read moreI have been going to Handsworth pArk for over 50 years for walks, leisure, events. It's a lively park with a bandstand, lake, children's play centre and playground, cricket pavillion. I have had picnics, music festivals, carnivals, taken visitors, lived nearby. Handsworth festival an annual community event of which I was committee was held there for years. Then Birmingham International Carnival was held there. I've provided costumes and stalls for this event. Vassaiki is popular. The community Centre, which is not up for sale, held many events. I went swimming there quite often. My children and grandchildren, pupils from Supplemntary School enjoying playing Nd learning in the Play Centre and open park Visitors were taken for walks round the lake picking up leaves, stones, sticks, features and one other item to make collages or keep as souvenirs. Some of these things have found their way all over the world. feeding the ducks was a fun time for children and adults alike. The annual Sports Day organised by Sted Wallen brought communities together and international cricketers. A scary memory is of walking through the there after going to blues in top Handsworth. Having a Church yard and grave to cross as a short cut to Westminster Rd was no joke whilst tired and slight tipsy. The borders around Handsworth park housed famous people, artistes writers professionals, rich and poor. It has a varied, colourful history and we need to collect and tell...
Read moreReally nice park. My Westie loves it!! ETA-: A very nice, well kept park that is split in two halves by a railway line and you can often see and hear trains going by. The first half of the park has the Leisure Centre and car park, also a large, well equipped children's playground. There are toilets inside the leisure centre that are available for park users. This half of the park is rather hilly and can be difficult for people with limited mobility, there are plenty of benches to rest on and watch the world go by. Handsworth Cricket Club is also in this half of the park, with lots of grass and benches to sit on to watch play. There is also a basketball court and outdoor gym equipment in this half. Crossing over the railway line is by a bridge built at the same time as the park in blue brick (late Victorian), you then walk down a fairly steep incline to the park pool, which is a really pleasant walk, and flat! Lots of ducks and geese on the pool to watch and lots of benches to rest on. Parking is Holly Road side of the park, a large well set out car park with plenty of spaces. There isn't a cafe in the park, but there are shops fairly near both sides of the park. If traveling by bus, the 101 stops in Grove Lane right outside the park, or on the other side, the 16 stops almost outside the main park gates. I do recommend this park as a really pleasant community park with events going on all year. Btw, my Westie...
