Today I had quite an unexpected “urban wildlife” experience at the train station. As I was waiting for my train, I spotted a little family of rats, a mom and her tiny kids, scurrying through the station with surprising confidence. The mommy rat seemed to lead the way like she knew exactly where she was going, weaving through discarded snack wrappers and around people’s shoes. Her little ones dutifully followed, slipping through the narrow gaps in the closed shop doors like they were going on a shopping spree of their own.
I half expected people around me to be freaked out, maybe jump back or stare, but… nothing. It was as if the rats were simply another part of the station’s routine, as normal as the morning coffee run. People barely blinked, some even stepped around the rats as if they were just another commuter group making their way. It made me wonder how often these furry little shoppers come out for their nightly rounds when everyone’s gone.
