At the heart of Birmingham's bustling culinary arena lies an establishment that has not just raised, but redefined the bar for the humble Mexican staple, the burrito. This is Birmingham Tortilla, a beacon of gastronomic brilliance that has masterfully infused the essence of haute cuisine into a dish that is traditionally cloaked in comforting simplicity. The expertise I bore witness to on my recent visit was a testament to the establishment's commitment to culinary excellence, and a reaffirmation of my belief in the power of food to stir the senses and inspire the soul.
As I crossed the threshold, the restaurant welcomed me with an intoxicating mélange of aromas that was a harbinger of the delights to come. The warm embrace of the rustic décor, imbued with a chic twist, seemed to whisper promises of an unforgettable journey of flavours. The lighting, restrained yet deliberate, danced on the reclaimed wood, creating an atmosphere that was at once intimate and welcoming.
My culinary odyssey began with the star of the evening – a burrito, an unassuming protagonist in the grand narrative of gourmet cuisine, yet at Birmingham Tortilla, it was transformed into a tour de force of gastronomic innovation. This was not merely a burrito, but a symphony of flavours, meticulously composed and elegantly presented.
The first bite was nothing short of an epiphany. The tortilla was a masterstroke of culinary craft – a canvas of perfect elasticity and subtle flavour, which cradled an ensemble of ingredients with a grace that evoked the delicate balance of a prima ballerina. The fillings, a medley of locally sourced produce and sustainably raised meats, were a celebration of freshness and quality that was almost palpable. The mélange of textures and tastes – the succulent tenderness of the meat, the vibrant crunch of the vegetables, the creamy decadence of the beans and cheese – each played their part in this harmonious composition, culminating in a crescendo of flavours that left me in awe of the skill and creativity of Birmingham Tortilla's culinary team.
Yet, the food was but a part of the extraordinary experience. The service was exemplary, with Dylan, our server, acting as the conductor of this culinary orchestra. His knowledge was encyclopedic, his passion infectious, his attention to detail impeccable. Dylan's recommendations were thoughtful and personalised, his service was prompt without being intrusive, and his warmth added a layer of conviviality that enriched the dining experience. He, much like the burrito I was served, was a testament to the fact that even the seemingly mundane, when executed with expertise and passion, can rise to exceptional heights.
In conclusion, Birmingham Tortilla is more than a restaurant. It is an epicurean theatre where the humble burrito takes centre stage, stunning its audience with a performance that is as poignant as it is delicious. It is an establishment that eschews the ordinary, daring to dream, daring to innovate, and daring to elevate. And in this audacious journey, it is not alone, for it has Dylan, and the rest of the committed team, by its side, championing its cause with an unwavering dedication to quality, service, and the enduring power...
Read moreSunday 24th April mid-afternoon. I do not usually write reviews however due to my amazing experience at Tortilla Birmingham I felt compelled to do so. I have a few food allergies, some of which are not common and as you can imagine it is challenging to find out what ingredients are in certain foods. I usually feel very anxious as I have had such bad experiences in the past and I feel people do not take allergies seriously enough, but I could not thank the team more for making me feel so at ease and reassured. I felt one member of staff who would not tell me her name really went above and beyond to ensure I got everything I needed. She was very attentive and friendly and even though it was quite busy she guided me through the whole menu and pinpointed all the foods I could or could not have. As their foods are freshly prepared, they have been able to create a small booklet which I have never seen anyone else do and I would highly recommend asking for, which includes an in-depth breakdown of all the ingredients. They have a wide variety of options for vegans, gluten and allergy suffers which are very tasty, filling and leaves you wanting more. On top of all that they gave me my meal on the house which honestly made my day! I could not fault them and thank them enough for understanding, I highly recommend this...
Read moreTortilla in Grand Central was one of my go to places to eat almost everyday after work - I usually got the large quesadilla. I was SHOCKED when I went back in the new year. I asked for a large pork quesadilla and while ordering was not told that this whole medium/large deal had changed and it is only one size medium. While looking at the lady putting the topics I was SHOCKED again to see how little of the salsa and pork was added on, although there was a generous amount of cheese. On receiving my order I was confused - not because I haven’t had the new quesadilla where it is cut into 2 instead of 4 - but because of how tiny and light it was. I went to ask whether it was medium or large - and then was told that it is just one size now. Well, this should’ve been pointed out to me when I asked for ‘large’ so I could’ve ordered a side as well. I’m so disappointed - Tortilla used to be one of my favourites, guess I’ll just have to make the New Mexican places like zambrero and zocalo my new go to. It is actually disgraceful how the quesadilla used to be bursting with toppings - I’m not saying it needs to be that way, but barely putting on any pork and filling it with cheese is NOT the solution. The whole restaurant was empty and rightfully so - I don’t see why anyone would want to pay big bucks for such...
