Enjoyed an invigorating walk along the sands on a sunny and breezy day to get a close look at this stunning stainless steel artwork. It's the northernmost sculpture on the Mythic Coast Artwork Trail along the seafront, and one of two that's actually on the beach. Installed in 2013, it sits on a concrete base that is hidden under the sand. The shell is submerged at very high tides, but when the tide goes out, you can climb right inside it and read inscriptions taken from "The Sea Swallow ", the magical children's story that inspired this coastal trail. It's a photographer's dream, especially at sunset or when the waves are lapping around it. There's a modern promenade café with wonderful sea views, and a small pay and display car park, close by.

Beautiful piece of beach art that is ageing like a real shell. It was polished stainless steel when it was first "planted" it's taking on a lovely patina as it settles into the landscape. I can't understand why anyone wouldn't give this 5*s, it's just a nice thing to look at. Sunsets look spectacular with it in the foreground. Go see it & get an ice cream while you're here.

Lovely piece of Beach art, always makes me smile whenever I see it. Really like how it's never the same view of it every time you visit. Sometimes it's underwater and not visible, sometimes the tide is out and even the base is exposed, other times it glistens in the Sun and on occasion it makes a good wind shelter. Always changes but still the same Shell.

Lovely quiet beach to access with children. Spent a few hours here with the deck chairs, bucket and spades which was lovely.

Beach was very clean, few pieces of rubbish we spotted we removed ourselves to help contribute to the cleanliness it holds. Well worth the parking fee at £1 an hour of the afternoon, not sure it's this rate regularly though. There was a parking warden that came to check I had paid so be warned if you risk not paying for parking your likely to get a ticket.

Nice little cafe on the sea front to use aswell for snacks, meals and drinks. Worth a check out for families as there is a decent sized park over the road from the...

An invigorating walk along the shingle beach on a windy day, watching the waves crash against this fantastic steel artwork. It's one of a series of sculptures inspired by "The Sea Swallow", a children's book based on local folklore. When the tide is out it's fun to climb inside it and read extracts from the book inscribed on it. Did not spot the Sea Ogre - must have been hiding under the waves! - but I did see flocks of small birds searching for food among the pebbles. Great views of the Cumbrian hills on...
