Located in the park right off the princess street this place is worth a stop due to its interesting and emotional story: The Wojtek the Soldier Bear Memorial is a tribute to one of World War II’s most extraordinary and heartwarming stories—a Syrian brown bear named Wojtek who served alongside Polish soldiers and became a symbol of resilience, camaraderie, and the enduring bonds between Poland and Scotland. Wojtek was adopted as a cub by Polish soldiers in Iran in 1942. He became an official member of the 22nd Artillery Supply Company of the Polish II Corps, even receiving the rank of Private. Wojtek famously helped carry ammunition during the Battle of Monte Cassino in 1944, boosting morale and earning legendary status among the troops. After the war, he lived at Edinburgh Zoo until his death in 1963, often visited by his former comrades who would greet him in Polish .

The story of Wojtek is an unusual one. An orhaned brown bear cub in Iran, traded for some tins of food to the Polish army by a small boy who was keeping him as a pet. The army adopted him, plied him with beer and cigarettes, taught him to carry heavy crates of ammo and gave him a name, rank, service number and paybook so he could move across borders with the rest of the corps. When the war was over much of the Polish men stayed in Scotland because of Soviet regimes and Wojtek was rehomed in Edinburgh Zoo where he lived happily, visited often by his army friends, until he died aged 21 in 1963

It's an amazing place to see!!! Such a lovely location, the monument is highly talantedly done, such a masterpiece ❤ This monument is especially touching, when you aware about the history, which lay before this bronze Man&Bear. If you don't know about this just absolutely brilliant book (which actually based on unbelievable , true story) - I do recommend you to read the book: Wojtek, the Bear - I swear to God, you want regret it. (Especially, if you are from Poland). Love it, love it, love it! This place- must see 👀

During WWII, Polish soldiers formed the Polish II Corps under British command. While traveling through Iran, the 22nd Transport Artillery Supply Company adopted an orphaned bear cub, naming him Wojtek (Polish for 'happy warrior' according to what I heard)".

Wojtek quickly became one of them — drinking beer, smoking/eating cigarettes, play-wrestling soldiers, and such. When the British banned pets in military camps, the Poles officially enlisted him as Private Wojtek, complete with a serial number. He later carried artillery shells under enemy fire during the fierce Battle of Monte Cassino, earning him legendary status.

After the war, he was mustered out of the Polish Army and lived out the rest of his life at the Edinburgh Zoo in Scotland. He was often visited by his former comrades, some of whom even jumped into his enclosure to wrestle. Media attention contributed to Wojtek's popularity. He was a frequent guest on BBC television's Blue Peter programme for children.

His legacy lives on in statues and memorials across the world — a testament to one of history’s most incredible...

2. Kolordu Mısır'a ulaştığında ve İtalyan savaş bölgesine taşınmaya hazırlanırken, artık tamamen büyümüş olan ayı selamlamayı ve erzak taşımayı öğrenmişti ve bira içmekten, sigara yemekten, askerlerle güreşmekten ve her fırsat buldukça yüzmekten keyif almıştı. aktif savaşa giren birliği ; askerlerin savaş sahasına evcil hayvan getirmesi yasaklandığından sorumluluğu üzerlerine alarak 2. Kolordu'nun 22.
