Really lovely modern mall with lots of shops, Queens Square just off to one side with a huge host of other retailers and a park (memorial gardens, with play park) just off to the other side. It is really well connected with the bus station and Crawley train station literally a minutes walk (if that) from it. It also has a reasonably priced car park attached to it which gives you access into the mall itself via escalators, as well Orchard Street car park nearby, and the NCP and Town Hall car parks a 5 minute walk away (there are a number of other car parks but these are the main ones).
It has all of the shops you'd want to see and pre-covid very rarely any queues so it really is a great place to get some retail therapy done. The food court is decent, and there are a number of coffee shops elsewhere in the mall as well.
It is clean and the restroom facilities are clean, big and never usually too busy.
At the bottom floor of the mall there are usually seasonal events going on too (Santa's Grotto etc) so it has a personal touch and well thought out for families.
The only reason I have knocked a star off is due to the lifts - they are soooo slow and there are only 2 lifts in the centre of the mall which get packed so if you are a wheelchair user or have a buggy you may have to wait a while. Also, though this isn't really a fault of the malls, when I visited 2 days ago I felt that while covid queues were in place to stop people flooding shops, no one was adhering to social distancing guidelines or the floor markings specifying which ways you could walk. It felt a bit odd having a couple standing directly behind me in the queue (and at one point the man got so close he was beside me!) for Primark when I was quite clearly using a floor marking and keeping my distance from the people in front of me. If that could be enforced a bit more I'm sure people would feel a lot more comfortable!
Overall I do love an afternoon out...
Read moreLike so many shopping malls, this one is struggling to draw customers in. With Debenhams gone, three floors are empty, doesn't look as if they will be let any time soon. The shops that remain do a good job, but it is sad to see so few customers inside. People used to come here from surrounding areas, and I'm hoping that now Covid restrictions are being relaxed, they will return. But the owners need to rethink - if the only stores they have are the same stores as elsewhere, why would people bother? Yes, they're all in one building, but does it do enough to attract? Reducing the cost of parking would help. The supermalls like Bluewater don't charge a penny and yes, I understand the difference: crawley mall is in town, people could park and use it to visit outside shops, diluting the purpose of trying to attract to the shops IN the mall. But reducing the price of parking would go a long way to bringing customers from out of town. And why not have a unit that is divided into four or six smaller businesses? It would be great to see quirky/interesting shops, rather than the national shoos that are in there. The rent split could attract businesses that couldn't otherwise afford to be in the mall, and you could end up with a much more attractive mix of shops, to the benefit of all the businesses, with more people coming in, and the mall owners with rent paid. To be honest, it's a little depressing to go in there at the moment, with all the empty units. Time for the owners to be radical and make it an exciting and attractive shopping mall, that is different from all the others? Fingers crossed... Further update: no progress, and with the state of the economy, no real surprise. Further, further update. No...
