Be careful—very careful. You might end up on a police blacklist or—who knows—maybe even arrested. Orwellian nightmare in Eastbourne at the Beach Shack.
I’ve had my coffee there nearly every day since they opened—not because the coffee was great or cheap (neither criterion is met). There were three people there who knew how to make coffee: one left and opened his own shop, one still works there, and the third is on maternity leave. I kept going mainly because of the customers the view attracts; I know nearly all of them, and we always had thoughtful conversations.
I hadn’t been for a while, and yesterday I went with my fiancée for a coffee—only to be told that we’re banned because of a joke I made a while ago. Really?
So, okay, I can accept that I’m banned—it’s fine. I can accept that maybe some “snowflake” couldn’t digest a joke. But I was told the police were called, they looked at the recording of me saying the joke, and I’m on a ban list now.
I can always get a coffee and drink it on the beach—not at the Beach Shack—but come on. Nobody should have the right to claim morality over a joke and, moreover, call the police—and, if true, break GDPR laws by sharing videos with them as if I were some sort of criminal. Really? Is this how they treat clients who spent their money there nearly every single day since they opened?
The joke—ah, the joke. There was a discussion about psychotherapists, and I said someone had spelt the word wrong: it’s spelled “psycho the" as in three words instead of together. I mean, I still find it funny and regardless if you agree with me or not, do you believe that the police should look at videos with me just because of that?!
I’m not the type of person to write negative reviews; I know how damaging this can be. But the look on my fiancée’s face when she heard we’re banned… made me very angry. I don’t need your coffee or anything else, but I will delve into this in a legal way. Since when you call the police and cast a shadow on my...
