Took my Grandson here on Saturday. It brought back a lot of memories for me. Lots of things there from our amazing city, the city of Newcastle Upon Tyne & surrounding areas. Makes you proud. The negative side of this is there were so many things not working... like some of the interactive buttons did not work, a few display areas were pretty baron & empty & the worst thing was the air hokey table of which was one of the things I told my Grandson about was broken & has been for some time according to one of the workers I spoke to along with the Red Arrows Simulator machine... they have both been broken for many months & no matter how many times the staff ask for updated on when & how these two main attractions would be fixed & back up & running, there is no word of respons from the higher up staff. I think that is pretty shoddy of those higher power staff. I could see how upset that member of staff was when I asked as No1 how Dissapointed he could see we were & No2 how often he gets asked those questions & having to let us & many others down. It's such a shame as word gets around just by word of mouth, never mind by readers of these reviews, once they hear things are not working, that will drastically reduce attendance to what was once a great place to go as I remember it as a kid. Granted, the simulator wasn't there then, but the air hokey table was & lots of other things were around that. But once I heard that it was broken & how long for plus all the other concerns that staff member told me about, I didn't bother leaving the bottom floor, I took my Grandson to The Handcock Museum instead. This I fear will be...

This is a large and interesting museum, divided into themed areas. There's little overall sense of a theme so one can see radically varying ideas in conflict. One area presents the north-east's long history of inward migration, showing the positive and inspiring stories from the many people who have moved here, and why they did so.

Another, titled Charge!, tries to show north-east military history and modern activities as a thrilling, inspiring Boys' Own story almost entirely free of injuries, deaths (whether to soldiers or civilians) or the political and economic purposes of the devastating wars that the UK has engaged in. Military propaganda abounds in this exhibition which includes war pornography magazines, and slick videos that explain nothing at all about, for example, our occupations of Afghanistan. Another exhibition of military technologies whitewashes what they were developed to do: kill, injure and destroy.

A temporary exhibition, 'From Steam to Green', is a basic guide to the history of energy production in the region. While simple, it's well-presented and will keep kids occupied. That's also true of the science & technology exhibition on the top level which has lots of hands-on activities.

It's a shame there's little opportunity for visitor feedback to individual...
