My wife and I were driving from York up to Bamburgh stopping at a few places along the way. The Italian Gardens was our first stop. It was a lovely day, perfect opportunity to get out and stretch our legs.
We parked up on the Esplanade, had no problem finding a spot. It was a weekday early September and there was even an ice cream van parked by the clock tower.
We strolled for about an hour, up and down the narrow paths, in and out of the woods. All the while magnificent views of the ocean and across the bay into Scarborough.
The Gardens proper were lovely, well maintained, even though it was the end of the season the flowers still had some life in them. Very tranquil.
If you so desired, and didn't mind the hike back up the cliffs, you could take the paths all the way down to the beach. I believe there is a trolley lift that goes up from the clifftop to the beach, but we didn't try it. It might be seasonal.
Overall, a great start to our epic road trip and well worth a visit if you are anywhere...
Read moreIt's worth having a look if you're walking around the Spa complex and gardens. It looks somewhat tired, but reading the story board gives you an insight into the history of the very pleasant gardens. They are sheltered from the sea by virtue of being below the top road in south bay and has many tree surrounding it. They cause a shadow and take goodness out of the soil, for the roses, so volunteers are replacing the old roses with modern disease resistant varieties. This is on going and will look splendid when completed. There are benches to sit and contemplate the beauty and listen to the birds song. You can also see the memorial plates on the benches, showing how others have enjoyed sitting in the gardens. The squirrels are quite cheeky in their quest for food, as well as the pigeons. On hot days you can smell the roses and hear the bees. A nice interlude...
Read moreFor my fiancés birthday, we were wondering what to do. April windy and cloudy day so not beach weather. found the south cliff Italian gardens at Scarborough, parked on the Esplanade for free and walked down into the gardens. Free toilets, Lots of beautiful sea views , great exercise and fresh sea air. Gardens were well maintained and had it been a sunny warm day could relax with a book. Walked down through the tiered paths and a curious squirrel came to see if I had treats. Walked to the Clock cafe and had cappuccino and cake in the delightful cafe before wandering down to the sea front. Used the vernacular railway to get back upto the esplanade and back to the car. Lovely day and will return next time we visit...
