Sidmouth is a sparkling little gem within the Jurassic Coast World Heritage site. Nestling at the mouth of a valley, it's actually bigger than it appears, as you discover when driving down the primary road into the 'touristy' bit by the sea. Sidmouth has a wonderful range of shops and loads of nooks and crannies to explore. The coastal path can be accessed easily, but either east or west involves a steepish climb, so beware if mobility and/or fitness is a personal issue. Sidmouth sea front is very picturesque and has benefitted from a lot of work to protect it from storms. Hotels account for most of the buildings running adjacent to the promenade. All are high quality and worth checking out. The town is well served by B&Bs if your budget or inclination does not lean towards a hotel-stay. Sidmouth seems to lean towards the more mature end of the spectrum, so if the youngsters in your group are reliant on arcades and noise to keep them occupied, this is not the place to come. Read moreLovely place to visit for a day or mini break. We last visited here on a sunny summer's day during their folk festival by shear luck and it made our day very enjoyable and memorable with family. With buskers playing some brilliant instruments, stalls with gifts, gorgeous clothes and accessories made us feel like we were on holiday and we didn't want to leave. Our three dogs got to have a dip in the lovely sea at one end of beach and my husband swam the length of it all, very calm waters. If you need to stop for a drink or fancy a cream tea we cannot recommend the Riviera Hotel enough their patio area was pristine and beautiful, service was excellent and the cream tea was the very best we could of stayed sat their all day in their little oasis right on the sea front. We certainly be returning to Sidmouth and the Hotel...
Read moreIf you visit Sidmouth and its glorious beaches with rolling waves, great for surfing, then be sure to eat and drink at the Riviera Hotel directly opposite. This Hotel has a prime position being so close to the beaches. The Hotel is grand and opulent yet is friendly and casual at the same time. Lots of chandeliers and large vases of fresh cut flowers abound. Lovely bar and restaurant. Nice outdoor seating at the front of the Hotel where you can eat and drink. Friendly staff, excellent lunch menu and highly recommend the Crab or Chicken sandwiches. Very good prices considering the splendour of the Hotel and surroundings. The front is flat and makes walking easy. Suitable for wheel chairs and mobility scooters. Parking available but gets very busy. Plenty of other eating and drinking bars and fab fish and...
