We ordered 2 burgers for £14.95 each and a roast chicken sandwich for about £8.00. I was prepared to pay that much because we were on holiday and sat overlooking the sea at Sidmouth seafront. From outside, the place looked nice. We were sat outside, but the table was covered by midgets, we cleaned the sticky table as we could, but the midgets kept coming and ending in our drinks, so we moved inside. The food took more than 1 hour to arrive and it wasn't busy! After about 1 hour, we asked about the food and we were told it would arrive in about 10 minutes, no apologies. I noticed that other customers where asking for their food. I was going to leave if it didn't arrive in 10 minutes, but it did. No apologies for the delay. I was hoping it was going to be really good, considering the price, but it was a disappointment. W My burger arrived in a huge, cold toasted bun with a disproportionately small burger inside, which it was hot, to be fair. There were a few chips and a bit of salad, nothing special or worth the price. The "roast" chicken in the sandwich, tasted and looked like cheap supermarket chicken pieces, anemic and wet, with a bit of mayo. Definitely not roast chicken. It came with a few crisps and salad, which was the tastier bit. Again, not worth the price. As we were leaving, we made the young waiter notice that it took more than 1 hour for our food to arrive. The waiter was surprised and said that he will take notice, but no apologies. What they looked like the owners, surrounded by young people, were not friendly at all and looked stressed. Some good customer service could have made a bit of difference to an overpriced and disappointing meal. I should have left and asked a refund. More than £50 for 3 meals and drinks, waisted. Not...

The Fort Cafe is situated right on the side of the road , whose bright idea was it to place a notice board on the pavement that said , wait behind this board to be seated , as soon as a queue formed people were forced onto the road , a busy road , there were lots of empty tables , but no staff to direct patrons to a seat , thus people rather than stand on the road came in to the Fort and selected seats the suited them , This upset one member of the staff and she was vocal and angry ,

Not a great advert for customers .

Any way we had crab sandwiches and coffee ( think the crab had been liquidised ) , it was em , squidgy.....

Look it was a long day for one member of staff and the stress was showing , but Fort you need to take your ramparts down if you a dealing with the tourist laden public , that's your bread and butter , alienating them with attitudes and they won't come back and they will write reviews like...

Well theres been mixed reviews on this place. I can only speak about my own experience. I'm a local resident and have to say disappointed that we have such bad service in a coffee shop like this. I took my family for cake and tea last week, the ordering was a nightmare ,the service slow unprofessional and we waited over 40 mins for 2 children's sandwiches (£14charged)! And then to be verbally attacked by a very young waitress who had apparently charged me the wrong amount and demanded in front of everyone and with a raised voice that I pay more although I hadnt and she got it wrong ! Dreadful service , let's hope it gets a shake up asap as I certainly won't be back till it does. There were numerous complaints going on also around me such a shame as could be very good in this sought after...

Excellent location. Reliably reasonable food (I suspect). Moderately expensive. The chips were all a little over cooked, the garnish salad fresh, the veg burger cooked right but the bun too big & with an excessive amount of lettuce inside. The fish was cooked just right & drained well, but cooked in oil that was a bit too old. Overall I suspect the food is always cooked right & the service always functions well Large fish & chips, pot of tea, appletiser, large fish & chips & veg burger £32

A proper seaside café. Very clean and good seating inside and out. It was busy when we visited at about 4pm and the kitchen was just closing but they were continuing to serve drinks and cakes. We had cappuccino coffees and a nice hot cheese & onion pasty. If sitting outside, you need to keep an eye out for the keen odd seagull that might sell to sweep down and clean up an empty take next to you! Staff were quick and efficient.

Ah the Fort Cafe special, possibly the most perfect ice cream treat anywhere. I detour through Sidmouth just to eat one walking along the seafront. Crisp cone, a brilliantly sticky clotted cream vanilla ice cream, topped with a chewy Devon clotted cream that slightly freezes on the ice cream and a chocolate flake that pushes down into the cone. Life should be full of more simple pleasures like this.
