Believe it or not, this wooden staircase connecting the beach path to the clifftop Connaught Gardens is a Grade II listed building! It was constructed in the 19th century and replaced a stairway cut into the cliff that had eroded away. I reached it by way of a scenic beachside path that begins at the western end of the prom. It's an open staircase, easy enough to climb though daunting to anyone who doesn't like heights as you can see right down to the ground through the gaps in the stairs as you ascend (not the case when you're coming down, it just feels like walking down three ordinary flights of steps). The view of the coastline when you reach the top is spectacular. There's a takeaway built into the cliff near the foot of Jacob's Ladder where you can get homemade sandwiches, pasties, ice-cream and drinks. Perfect for a picnic on the beach! Read moreFound this place by accident really, we went to Sidmouth for the afternoon as we normally do. We live in Exeter so only 25min drive. Car parks are easy to get to and no badly priced. We often walk around and have a cream tea. This time though we decided to walk along the sea front and see where it took us..... the path looked like it stopped, but it took us around to jacobs ladder.
