We had a private tour with Welsh cakes and tea from the fabulous owner, curator, restorer and host, Geoff Haden.
Upon arrival, Geoff detailed the history and significance of the house as well as its cultural importance to Swansea. I was struck at how nostalgic and comforting it felt when we sat down in the front room, as if it were a relative’s home. Geoff highlighted that feeling when he described the home as Dylan’s cwtch, his place he could always come back to with his mother there.
I was so in awe and overwhelmed at how painstakingly put back together it was. The time and effort and love that Geoff and co have put into making this home what it once was, to accurately piece together a Welsh home that birthed it’s most famous export, from disrepair to a real, physical time capsule of an era in Welsh history, all the while maintaining a sense of home and warmth, the essence of hiraeth, is nothing short of sensational.
A must visit for all Dylan fans and anyone curious. Thank...
Read moreIt was truly a treat to stay in the house where Dylan Thomas was born, grew up and wrote much of his early work. If you are a Thomas fan, or even if you think you might become one someday, don't miss the chance to stay a night or more here. There are many writer's houses you can visit, but I don't know of any others you can actually live in. Since the house is restored quite faithfully to what it would have been like when DT lived there, it lacks a number of 'modern conveniences', but this is more than made up for by the authenticity of the experience. The house is full of interesting artefacts and is the best place in the world to read some of DT's many reminiscences of his childhood. We stayed for a week, using the house as a base for exploring Swansea, the Gower, Laugharne, the mountains, etc. Highly...
Read moreWhilst visiting our grandson at university in Swansea, my wife and I made a trip to Cwm Donkin Park and Dylan Thomas' house. It proved to be a wonderful experience . The. park is very well maintained and exactly as we imagined and after spending about an hour there, we moved on to Dylan's birthplace for the house tour . What a treat was in store for us! We were met by the owner, Geoff, who sat us in the front parlour and proceeded to give us an illuminating history of the house and the time Dylan spent there. We were then left to investigate the whole house in our own time and see how the family lived there. It was a real priveledge to be looked after so well by Geoff, a remarkable man, who made us feel most welcome and was so knowledgeable that we learnt much more about Dylan's life - a totally...
