We visited on a wet Friday afternoon so Evil Eye wasn't very busy. The ground floor is light and spacious, but upstairs the spaces are more interesting with benched booths and decadent day beds upholstered in jewel coloured fabrics that create some very oppullent intimate spaces. The second floor has a very Moroccan or Middle Easter feel. A lot of work has gone into the decor with the paint on the walls around the stairs fading through a series of saturated colours as you move up through the building - a really lovely effect. Evil Eye is a cocktail bar and has a fantastic selection to choose from including classics, newer creations, mocktails, long drinks including milkshakes and hot drinks too. They do not have any draft beers, but offer a very good range of bottled beers including locally brewed and also those from further afield. Two of us went for Wold Top Ale, one went for a Wold Marmalade Porter and the last of us chose a Mohito. The Mohito was well made and the mint was really fresh. When it was served our friend was given the option to add more cane sugar syrup if she wanted it sweeter which was a nice touch. Our Wold Top Ale was a good hoppy session IPA, refreshing with a clean aftertaste. The Wold Marmalade Porter was very dark and tasted of slightly burnt toast with marmalade and a cup of good black coffee - very nice, but I wouldn't want to have more than one as it had such a distinctive taste. Our friend thought it had a slightly fusty smell about it, but this dissipated over a short time. I thought the flavour improved and became sweeter as the beer lost its chill. We sat and watched people in the street below, wrestling with umbrellas and hoods when the skies opened. Evil Eye is a very pleasant place to sit and relax with a drink in the day time. I suspect the atmosphere will change dramatically in the evening when it is busier and the demographic shifts to a generally younger age group. Evil Eye is definitely a great place as long as the choice of drinks available includes what you're...

Read moreWhile spending a few days in York, we visited this bar. Due to COVID19 we had to queue & wait for a table. We were told they only had seats up stairs. We accepted, as we were keen to look at the place. The shop has a huge variety of spirits etc. The window has so many different bottles of gin, who knew the choice was so huge?! Once we were seated, the guy who showed us to our seats, looked at us in a very apologetic manner & said “ hmmm you need a phone, we order by using QR code” As if we were Luddites, incapable of using such technology! Because we are both 59, he assumed we were unable to use QR code reader & read the menu & order. We told him we had used the QR code reader & were able to order drinks & even pay contactless. We ordered 2 cocktails. The seating area upstairs is dire. Due to COVID19 they are clearly trying to accommodate customers. Why they haven’t tried to make the upstairs area a little more welcoming is beyond me. It’s like a prison cell circa 1500s. Pricing is ok. Drinks ok. Service ok. We finished our drink & left. I’ve looked online at the rest of the bar areas & it looks really nice & quirky. Sadly we weren’t privy to this. If you’re going to fill all areas with paying customers, at least try to make the place look enticing. And don’t judge...
