Myself and hubby stayed here for one night with friends on a bed and breakfast basis. Staff were pleasant and breakfast was nice. The room we stayed in (number 8) was lovely, being a good size with a super view and located on the first floor at the end of the corridor. At the end of our evening out we had a drink in the bar. Last orders were at 11.00 and we headed to bed very shortly afterwards. However, we were kept awake by what we were later told was the kitchen extractor fan making it's noise and also staff coming down the corridor to a staff room opposite ours and banging doors. This all subsided by about 12.30am. We were woken at 7.30 by a chap outside our room on a phone call. This was followed by lots of talking by more men and banging noises. We couldn't go back to sleep with the commotion. When we left our room to go for breakfast the staff room opposite had several workmen in it. There were tools and bags outside our door which we had to manoeuvre around. The workmen looked rather surprised to see us come out the bedroom like they weren't expecting any guests in residence. After breakfast we went to pack ready for checking out, again negotiating the tools and equipment. There was banging and drilling at this point..non of which could be heard downstairs in the pub/dining area. When we finally left to check out we found a painter up a ladder blocking the corridor! He had to move so we could get past. Our friends were totally aghast at the work going on and all the tools and hazards we had to avoid to get out. We were really unhappy that all this had spoiled our weekend stay. We were given no notice about the very clearly planned work that was going to take place. The manager (i'm assuming that he was the boss, he was in charge) said he did not know they were going to start so early. Well, i'm sorry, someone let them in and told them where to go and and had booked the work in. It would be prudent to arrange these jobs at a decent time of the morning so as not to disturb the guests that pay good money for their accommodation in your establishment. We came for a nice little break to relax and didn't expect to be woken up so early by contractors. I understand that maintenance has to be carried out but this should be at the consideration of your guests. We felt that we were completely unimportant and totally disrespected. We expressed our disappointment and explained how unsatisfactory our stay had been due to the disruption. We have been offered a 15% discount on a...
Read moreAs a longtime visitor to the picturesque seaside town of Whitby, I've had the pleasure of discovering many of the local pubs and eateries. However, the Duke of York has quickly become one of my absolute favorites. This charming establishment, nestled in the heart of Whitby, offers an unbeatable combination of warm hospitality, delicious cuisine, and an exceptional selection of ales. From the moment you step through the doors of the Duke of York, you're enveloped in a delightful atmosphere that harks back to the traditional British pub experience. The interior is adorned with rustic wooden beams, exposed stone walls, and cozy nooks that invite you to sink into a comfortable seat and while away the hours. The staff is exceptionally friendly and knowledgeable, eager to share their recommendations and ensure that every visit is a memorable one. The real star of the show, however, is the pub's impressive lineup of ales. With a rotating selection of local and regional brews, the Duke of York caters to the discerning palate of any beer enthusiast. Whether you're in the mood for a crisp, hoppy IPA or a rich, malty stout, the knowledgeable bartenders will guide you towards the perfect pint. I've sampled many of their offerings, and each one has been consistently well-crafted and bursting with flavor. But the Duke of York is not just a place to enjoy a fine pint – the food menu is equally impressive. From the perfectly cooked fish and chips to the mouth-watering steak and ale pie, every plate is a testament to the skill of the chefs. Overall, the Duke of York is a true gem in the heart of Whitby. Whether you're a local looking for a cozy spot to catch up with friends or a visitor seeking an authentic taste of Yorkshire hospitality, this pub is an absolute must-visit. With its charming ambiance, exceptional ales, and delectable cuisine, the Duke of York is the perfect place to while away an afternoon or evening in this gorgeous...
Read moreNot impressed at all by this pub, first time visiting and definitely the last. We went to watch the leeds united game which was advertised outside on the board but there were also other games on and customers were wanting to watch them. We questioned why couldn't we watch the game and we had a dispute over the other fans wanting their game on. We had to give up our table to move to the other end of the pub to wait for a seat. While we were sat watching the game there were people eating and enjoying the game. After they had finished they were told that they needed to move because the table had been booked for someone else. These customers were still ordering drinks and enjoying their day. Both tables had to move and moved without fuss but they soon realised that nobody turned up for their table. Absolutely disgusting, if people can eat and drink in the pub without booking a table because they were told they couldn't, why were they moved? All I can say is, look for a pub that actually appreciates their customers. Didn't have a good experience myself at the bar ordering drinks. I let everyone who was before me get served even though numerous times I was asked what I wanted. Then when I was actually next in the queue, they totally ignored me. The young man then had the cheek to say that the other customer shouted him. I told him I had been waiting and wasn't pushing in but he was sooooooo rude and told me that he couldn't see me. There was 3 other people at the bar after the rush. They couldn't even bring people's food out right or together, don't know if the table we saw complained but it was not good. This pub is a joke, understaffed on a bank holiday weekend, I won't be going again and will not be...
