Unfortunately unknown to us our stay coincided with Goth weekend so it was chaos in Whitby. We arrived at the hotel and found we only had 20 mins parking at the front , the girl behind the bar was very friendly and wrote us a parking pass that we could use in certain parts of Whitby so off we went in search of a spot after we had taken our bags to our ' room with a so called sea view' , the room was compact and the sea view was a view of the balcony/ outdoor drinking area without much view of the sea at all, we were informed the bar was shutting at any minute so we weren't to bothered with the view as long as we could get a good night's sleep after our long journey up there. We drove off expecting to find a parking space, but no such luck! After well over an hour of driving around every single road in Whitby numerous times we were lucky enough? to find one over 15 minutes walk from the hotel perched on the top of the hill! We finally went back to the bar and had a couple of very overpriced drinks, then went else where. Tired and eager for a good night's sleep we went back to our room, unfortunately we had far from a good night's sleep as the young couple up stairs were arguing at the top of there voices and progressively got worse and worse , no one was around in the hotel to put a stop to this din and when it got to the stage of it sounding like they were beating the hell out of each other the police arrived and eventually there was silence, at least up til around 9 o'clock am when the arguing started again. We decided to go for breakfast and check out, the breakfast was absolutely perfect but that was about it! We then had to walk with our cases back up the extremely steep hill to get to our car and got soaked as it was raining quite heavily!! To sum it up, I would never stay here again. Although the staff were friendly we found there is absolutely no authority in the place to control any rowdy behaviour from out of control guests! Also if any elderly guests stay here I would think it near on impossible for them to get back to their car if parked any where on the hill where we had to! Total nightmare!!!

Three young staff on duty, all clearly needing some training. They spent more time chatting at the end of the bar than looking after the fairly sparse crowd in the pub. The internet was down, so I suggested they reset the router. An hour later, it was still down and nobody had bothered to tell me if they had actually raised it with 'the boss' as the female behind the bar had said. More than half an hour after ordering my £13.50 gammon and eggs just before midday, I asked why the meal was taking so long. One of the young male servers disappeared upstairs, returning with my food and several other plates ordered long after mine. As my lunch was not very hot, I guess it had been sitting under a heat lamp for ages, the chatting having taken priority over food delivery. There was a generous-sized piece of meat, two fried eggs and the ubiquitous triple cooked chips, the latter being especially cool. Having said that, it was a decent plate of food. Compared with some of the other quayside eateries, the Pier has very reasonable prices on their menu, although £2.95 for a one-cup pot of tea did seem steep to me.

The Pier Inn is a very nice, dog-friendly pub near the Whitby Pier - located in a historic, listed building. The beer selection is decent, there are always a few real, hand-pumped ales on in addition to the usual roster of British and international lagers. The menu is typical for local, British pub grub, and the Jumbo Cod I had (twice!) was both excellent and truly "jumbo" - best fish & chips I had in quite a while: the batter was crunchy and tasty, the chips well-cooked - even the mushy peas are edible (and not as much of a sludge as they usually are!) And at just UKP 9.95 I think the value is excellent, too. Drinks prices are moderate, the bar staff friendly and helpful, the décor clean and consumer-friendly. Just be aware that there will be a lot of dogs at this place, and some will be wailing while you're eating.

I was last in this place about 4 years ago and it was ok, it wasn't brilliant, but my recent visit has given that prior opinion a complete 180 - absolutely horrid staff. We were struggling to find somewhere to eat on the Friday night and Whitby seemed to be jumping with groups of people and boozers/stag parties.

The 4 of us went in to look for a table, without any success, so we tried elsewhere, without any success. It was a cold, damp autumnal evening and we then resorted to trying to get a table outside. We went in and the Polish woman behind the counter informed us they would stop serving food within 20 minutes, so we told her that was fine and asked if we could sit in the empty table on the left, to which the younger barman advised food was unavailable and those tables were reserved - another couple came in and sat down at the table. He also informed them it was reserved, but they just ignored him. He started making remarks about how he was sick of repeating the same old phrases to people who don't listen. He failed to state why it was reserved and why we were unable to eat there. Looking round the pub it was full of yobs and zero Covid rules were being observed/followed. We ended up trying The Magpie Cafe, which was superb in comparison to this sorry business. The Pier Inn had rude staff and a very unwelcoming/hostile atmosphere.

I definitely won't be back and I hope it sinks without a trace. It makes one wonder if there is an anti-Scottish sentiment with the staff or if the guy behind the bar didn't like that I was nearly double his height.

Being a regular visitor to Whitby at this time of year, it was unseasonably busy with very little businesses or people obeying Covid precautions. Very...

What a dump don't be put off by the entrance it only gets worse ,oh where do I begin, on entering the bar there is no warm welcome just a bar man who doesn't know his a...e from his elbow we decided to have a drink and ask about parking etc we were given a voucher and informed that the parking was a way up the street look for a W and park there we had our drinks 1 pint and a gnt £11.40 , my pint was disappointing to say the least and had to leave it . We then tried the toilets oh my dear the door handle should have warned me off but I continued wish I hadn't absolutely disgraceful I washed my hands then had to apply sanitiser after touching the door handle. As we sat there contemplating our next move we noticed that the tables had been cleared but not wiped down . We decided to check-in and the same guy from the bar still had no clue he informed us that he didn't know if we had paid or not ? And he wouldn't charge us for breakfast until he could find out... we went up to our bedroom up the dirtiest grey carpet and couldn't touch the sticky banisters of fear of catching something, when then went past the kitchen yes the kitchen!! Up some more filthy carpets and manky banisters to our bedroom to which we walked in put the key on the bed turned around walked out and kept on going without saying a word ,please be aware when booking as it seems to have good reviews but rest assured if COVID-19 if it didn't start in China it started there , nobody seems to care staff just seem to wander around with blinkers on the whole place needs a dam good clean , this was supposed to be for my 60th birthday but we ended up just driving...
