Void Art Centre — Attraction in Ireland

Contemporary art gallery in the heart of Derry Londonderry city. Great exhibition programme, including cutting edge in-house curated shows and visiting exhibitions, recently one from the Hayward gallery. Free entry.

The current show is about play and how we interact and develop our urban spaces. I brought my 8 month old and he could crawl all around the gallery floor. It was the perfect exhibition to visit, including an installation with swings, wooden structures with built-in deck chairs, a sand pit, and two screen film projection. The gallery had steps entrance with a wheelchair lift. On the day I visited the lift was being fixed and the gallery assistants helped me lift the buggy up the short steps. The staff are lovely, very welcoming, informative and friendly. There are toilet and changing facilities. On-street parking outside.

One of my favourite gallery spaces anywhere. This move to Derry City Center from nearby Patrick Street is a definite plus. Mary and the staff are building on the great work of the Voids first Director Maoliosa Boyle who really put this gallery on the map. The current exhibition is really worth a visit too.
