  • Browns in Town — BRAVO, BRAVO! *

Wow, just wow! This place absolutely deserves a Michelin mention — a truly exceptional dining experience from start to finish.

From the moment we walked through the door, we were greeted warmly by the front-of-house staff and seated promptly. The restaurant wasn’t overly busy, yet it carried an elegant, vibrant atmosphere. The clientele were well-dressed, mature, and clearly there for the fine dining experience rather than a quick bite. Every gentleman seemed to be in a suit, every lady beautifully dressed, it set the tone immediately: this was a classy establishment. There was no noise or commotion, no cheap chaos like you might find in the lower-end spots nearby. Instead, there was calm, style, and quiet anticipation of good food, and did they deliver!

We were offered the set dinner menu, priced at £34.50 for two courses or £43 for three. At first glance, it might seem slightly on the pricier side, but let me assure you — it is worth every single penny. The menu was beautifully balanced with options that felt curated and seasonal. We decided to indulge and go for three courses each.

Our selections were:

Starters: Crispy Chicken Wings

Mains: Pan-Seared Duck Breast and 8oz Fillet Steak (served with seasonal vegetables and skinny chips)

Dessert: Milk Chocolate Truffle Cake

Drinks: The house red for my wife, and the Browns Bound Beer for myself.

The drinks were a perfect introduction. The house red was soft, smooth, slightly sweet yet mellow; a truly enjoyable glass of wine. The Browns Bound beer was light, subtly citrusy, and perfectly balanced; refreshing but sophisticated. Both drinks paired beautifully with our mains.

The chicken wings arrived piping hot and wonderfully crisp; clearly freshly cooked, with just the right amount of coating and a beautifully balanced buffalo sauce that had flavour without overpowering heat.

Then came the mains, and I can safely say these were both showstoppers. The Pan-Seared Duck Breast was, quite simply, perfection on a plate. Cooked flawlessly; tender, juicy, and full of depth. The accompanying condiments, including the rich red wine jus, added a beautiful fruity undertone that married perfectly with the duck. Every bite was an explosion of flavour; elegant, balanced, and sophisticated. It was so good that I’d happily return to Browns In Town just for this dish alone.

The Fillet Steak was equally outstanding. I’ve had steaks in many restaurants across the UK and Europe, but very few get it this right. The meat was tender, buttery, and perfectly seasoned. What truly surprised me was the peppercorn sauce, it was the best I’ve ever had. Rather than being harsh or overly peppery, it was creamy, mild, and beautifully flavoured, it complemented the steak rather than dominating it. The seasoning, the quality of the meat, and the finesse of cooking; all of it showed the skill and care that goes into every dish here.

By the time dessert arrived, I thought nothing could top the previous two courses but I was wrong. The Milk Chocolate Truffle Cake was divine. It had a light, mousse-like texture that simply melted in the mouth. It wasn’t overly sweet, and the accompanying vanilla ice cream complemented it beautifully without overpowering the chocolate flavour. It was the perfect way to end an exceptional meal.

The service throughout was faultless. The staff were polite, attentive, and genuinely seemed passionate about what they do. They checked on us just enough without hovering, a balance that only truly great restaurants get right. The atmosphere remained relaxed and elegant from start to finish.

Our total bill came to just over £100 for two people, which, considering the outstanding quality of the food, presentation, and overall experience, felt like exceptional value for money. You truly get what you pay for — top-quality ingredients, beautifully cooked dishes, and professional service.

Browns In Town has now firmly secured its place as one of my top restaurants. 5 STARS!

We had originally booked Browns in Town online, only to realize that our schedule wouldn't allow the night we booked. Consequently, we were delighted when we happened by Browns a bit before 7pm on a Saturday night, stuck our heads in the door and discovered they had a cancellation, and we could have a table till 8pm. Challenge accepted!

Browns has a splendid and creative (also: very reasonable at £27 for two courses) price fixe menu, with numerous creative takes on traditional dishes. My wife loved her daily special fish appetizer and enjoyed her roasted pork belly (though she found it surprisingly lean for that cut... A feature in my eyes, a bug in hers). I thought my beef croquettes were tasty but mild, and my chicken -bacon risotto was a good and flavorful take on the Italian classic. Both meals came with a choice of sides. I opted for garlic chops (good) and my wife for parmesan truffle fries, which initially lacked much flavor (missed truffle oil?) but which our server graciously refreshed, and made much yummier.

Overall, Browns was a very pleasant experience with excellent food and a very good value to boot. Of course, the service was classic Derry, gracious...

We visit Browns every time we go to Derry. Has always been very good. Unfortunately, this time, it was very poor. The Menu did not read well, but we finally picked something. My husband had scallops and smoked beef, which was not a good combination and cold when it arrived. I had a pulked pork slider, but only because there was nothing else i liked on the menu.. My husband had pork fillet and pork Belly. The pork belly was delicious, and the jus, but the pork fillet was very overcooked and dry! I had braised venison which was more pulled and reshaped! Very tasty with the jus, but after that was exhausted it was very dry.. when my husband complained about the pork. He was offerered a fresh piece of pork fillet. However, after waiting 25 mins a full new plate of pork arrived. It was a slight improvement but i had long since finished my dinner and the manager was obviously not happy! My husband ate a few bites and we left. We were not offered a reduction on the bill or a complimentary drink or even a proper apology. At Almost £100 for a lousy dinner we will never return..very sad as always our favourite in...

Their other location was closed on a Sunday night, our host inadvertently mentioned that there is another one... That's all I needed to make dinner plans! ☺️ Instead of the usual pub crawl we chose to enjoy a quiet dinner at Browns in Town. The local seafood chowder needed a lot of salt and pepper, but was the creamiest chowder I have had so far, period. Just the enough consistency, just the enough thickness... It only had fish and I was expecting other kinds of seafood. Anyway, it was ok. The lamb shoulder came in 2 round pieces of what looked like brisket made in medallions. This is by far THE best lamb in the world. I wonder what it would taste like with mint jelly... I thought of that flavor all evening. My husband had the crispy chicken wings and boy, were they crispy! The catch of the day, cod, was very well prepared and was sitting on a bed of greens. My dessert was a phenomenal pana Cotta with almond milk. This is my weak spot - pana cottas... This one was delicious! Beer and food wine selection and good staff finish up the picture. I would definitely recommend!!!

One of the Browns Restaurant chain based on the Strand Road in Derry. A little disappointed in the decor - a bit tired and tables a bit 'roadside cafe' style. They offer a number of menu choice options so you should find something you like. Disappointed in our server.. asked a few questions about our food choices and she had no knowledge at all.... she didn't even offer to go and check in the kitchen or with someone more experienced. However when the tourist guests asked questions she did go and make enquiries - so not sure why a difference was made between us and them - service in general was disappointing from asking was everything ok until clearing the table when finished eating. Overall disappointed - not sure we would be enticed back .
