There's only one thing you need to do , if you haven't already been here. Just go. Now. Unfortunately don't know , how to get here by public transport. But parking , even though not massive , but cheap. Something below 2 £ for 4 hours . It's a lovely spot to see a scenic piece of England, as it feels from pages of classics of English literature. Walk is not hard around the area , even though it's quite steep , to go up or down to waterside . Public bathroom, are around. Don't expect nothing massive from castle , as it's partially rebuild 12 century stronghold, but if you are a history buff , or a kid , which is pretty much same in one pack , you'll definitely enjoy it. If not, just the walk around, within 1hour, around the town , won't live you unhappy , and without a thought, what it would be like living here. Long story short - great for kids and people of ages.

Beautiful historic remains of the castle.. the castle was destroyed hundreds of years ago... just a tower and prison block left..and a few ruins of gate post and wall parts.. and 2 hidden tunnels that the soldiers used to escape down to escape soldiers that were attacking the castle..the local council run it now..the queen still has ownership of it ..it's part of the dutchy of Lancaster estate.. where the moat used to be is a walk way down to the river and the surrounding area...it's a beautiful historic place to visit... you can stand near the prison and look out over the country side and the river below...it was a sunny day when i was there and it was beautiful to look out at the view and scenes....the ground is open all year round but the museum and prison are only open certain parts of the year.... check website before going...

We started walking to find the Knaresborough viaduct. The road we took led us down to the railway station. It was then a very long & steep descent towards the river Nidd. It was well worth the effort. The views were wonderful. We were lucky as the weather was a perfect summer's day. There's a small boat hire company that has a terraced cafe nearby. We settled for some local homemade ice cream from a shop also close by. We then walked back up towards the Castle. Pleased to say this was a much shorter route. The castle is a beautiful ruin overlooking the river. There is a bowling green with benches to sit & take in the whole atmosphere of the place yet just yards from the town centre & police station!

The castle ruins are set in very pretty manicured grounds overlooking the river and bridge. There is a World War 1 monument on the edge of the grounds too. There is a plaque on the wall stating the castle belongs to the Queen and its leased to the local council. The walk up from the river takes just a few minutes. It's not suitable for buggies, wheel chairs or anyone with issues walking up lots of steps. There were some Ravens flying around during our visit which the children enjoyed watching. There is a small museum opposite which we did not visit. Children were free and it was a small amount for adults.

Parking your car can be an issue especially in town. Like everywhere Covid has left its scars on the businesses but on my visit lots of people were visiting or out and about in the sunshine, absorbing the beautiful surroundings and perhaps a boat ride on the Nidd. Ice cream is a must on hot days and there are plenty of outlets. Lots of bars and eateries of all kinds too. The old castle grounds with some ruins, as well as the magnificent railway viaduct crossing the river. If you are thinking of visiting Knaresborough stop thinking, just do it. Its a lovely place.
