The castle is on a high ground position looking down on the river Nidd on the west side , the gate house on the east side is reached from the town without much effort, not much remains of this duchy of Lancaster castle due to the English civil war , however there is good portion of the Keep left to stir your imagination, the grounds are well kept with manicured lawns and flower beds. This castle is steeped in history , ( for example) the Knights that murdered Thomas Becket in Canterbury Cathedral , fled to Knaresborough Castle to lay low . Seating abounds around the castle for peace and tranquility , quite the opposite during the English Civil War. The view from the base of the Keep looking down onto the River Nidd , included in the view is the York to Harrogate railway viaduct is very popular in Yorkshire Calendars. It is well kept and looked after by the local council and a credit to the town and it's inhabitants , it's a place to spend quality time with the family and loved ones or solo time dreaming of Knights and damsel's in distress without spending a penny , now that is a dream for this Yorkshire man.
Highly recommend and visit often, the town is just as excellent as...
Read moreWhat an adilic place, set high above the beautiful valley and river below. Explore the castle ruins and dungeons at the same time as enjoying the amazing gardens and walks. Steps down to the river below, take you back in time almost, as you enjoy a bite to eat or drink at the river side, or take one of the many rowing boats to fully enjoy the river. Good food, drink and of course ice-cream :-)
There's a fee for the castle and dungeons tour and the rowing boats but it's reasonable. Knaresborough Town centre is a mix of different main street and independent shops, plenty of charity shops too if that's your thing. The gardens around the castle are beautiful and even has a large paddling pool for the kids. Plenty of seating areas and if you pick your route you can get down to the river if you are a wheelchair user. Town centre can get busy but there are quite a few car parks if you don't mind driving around abit as they are all quite small. Well worth a trip to see abit of lovely history, at the same time a gentle walk in the gardens, a look around the shops, then a trip to the river for ice-cream and a gentle rowing boat...
Read moreThere's only one thing you need to do , if you haven't already been here. Just go. Now. Unfortunately don't know , how to get here by public transport. But parking , even though not massive , but cheap. Something below 2 £ for 4 hours . It's a lovely spot to see a scenic piece of England, as it feels from pages of classics of English literature. Walk is not hard around the area , even though it's quite steep , to go up or down to waterside . Public bathroom, are around. Don't expect nothing massive from castle , as it's partially rebuild 12 century stronghold, but if you are a history buff , or a kid , which is pretty much same in one pack , you'll definitely enjoy it. If not, just the walk around, within 1hour, around the town , won't live you unhappy , and without a thought, what it would be like living here. Long story short - great for kids and...
