All locals should go. All tourists too. This previously well-funded local museum is now working off a shoe-string budget - and does an excellent job of doing so!
The staff are so warm, friendly, and welcoming. Introverts needn't fear, however. They're also very knowledgeable - clearly work there for the love of it. The content of the museum is really great. Some interactive exhibits, and some especially designed for children (mostly upstairs). Wheelchair friendly entrance, with a small lift, so most (but not all) areas are accessible, though it can be a tight squeeze due to the nature of the historic architecture. If you're one who prefers/needs space and quiet, I particularly recommend going out of peak times.
Slave trade exhibit is child-friendly and doesn't shy away from explaining the deplorable conditions of the slaves. I grew up in Wisbech, Cambridgeshire where Thomas Clarkson was from who got a mention. (Watch the film Amazing Grace for further detail on how the slave trade was politically fought. He's the grumpy nerdy Fen-man!) But I digress....
Local fishing exhibit features a voice recorded conversation describing what life was like 50-100 years ago (I can't remember, I'm writing this like 2 weeks later!) And explanation of traditional boat building.
I also learned Morecambe Bay has an off-shore gas field 😳 and how it's piped to shore (more complicated than you'd think).
Small cafe with appropriately scrummy tea cakes and (to my particular delight) Mince Pies in late March!
Tea and coffee sourced from Atkinson's.
Small giftshop with well chosen selection of books, trinkets,...

Like most museums the maritime Museum makes as much effort as possible to engage the visitors and show history in the best manner. With limited funds this is normally very hard but the Maritime Museum have achieved marvels. it is a little gem and well worth a visit.
Lancaster has a strong maritime history and links to the Slave Trade, the Titanic Disaster and many other maritime events that formed the United Kingdom and world trade.
An added bonus is the free entry for residents of Lancaster and...
Read moreWe arrived and surprised that we had to pay as we thought all museums were free but not council run museums. We paid and said that we would start by visiting the coffee shop only to be told it was shut due to lack of staff. Very disappointed as we checked the website before we started out and it stated cafe was open. Explained this at the reception and she said she would like her boss know. Before we could get a lift to the floor to start our visit there was a member of staff there to greet us and to open the cafe so we could have a drink and a bite to eat. THANK YOU VERY MUCH AND MUCH APPRECIATED. A very interesting museums and walk around for several hours. Just wish these websites would keep up to date. Staff very helpful and pleasant Thank...
