Crossing the Thames from Chiswick to Mortlake. Before it was built in 1933 it had previously been the site of a long standing ferry service from the 17th century. The bridge put an end to it. Constructed of reinforced concrete, faced with gleaming white portland stone with shapely balustrades, in which to lean on and gaze at the river's picturesque horizon. Stairwells go down from the bridge to the towpaths on both sides of the Thames. Five arches, only three of which span the water. The other two arch over the towpaths on both banks. Built in Palladian style to go with Chiswick House which is in close proximity. At the time it was built it was the longest reinforced concrete structure over the Thames. Of the twenty London bridges it is the 8th busiest for congested traffic. When it's not congested, traffic moves at breakneck speed. Great viewpoint of the Thames if you would like to see the end of the Cambridge and Oxford boat race. Good atmosphere with everyone cheering on their favourite team.
There is plenty of space for everyone to see the spectacular event from, including the surrounding Thames bank view if you prefer and the park view opposite the Mortlake finish arrival point for the boats to come into. There are some pubs not far from the bridge if you need another viewpoint. The bridge was closed to all traffic, and it made it very safe for adults and children to move around freely from one side of the bridge to the other to see what was going on.
