This is a wonderful park. The area surrounding it is also quiet and rather tranquil at times. There are several entrances dotted around on the numerous roads which outline the park. One such entrance is next to a row of shops. So you can grab some food items and head in for a nice afternoon picnic or even brunch.
There is a lot of park to explore. We started from the South side of the park this time, walking up to the North side. It's a pleasant walk even in the cold. Lost of grassy areas if you want to grab a seat, and lots of benches as well for those who would rather take a seat. The west side of the park contains the gardens with the flowers and it's generally quieter. But you will also find more ducks and geese on this said as well. The lake in the middle has a lot of different types of birds. So you'll see ducks, geese, swans, and some other birds (I don't know the names! Sorry).
The East side of the park has the children's area, which has a little cafe if you need anything to eat. Hot food and drink as well as ice cream. So you have options available. The children's area has a lot of things to play, very large rope climbing frame in the style of a pyramid with a slide from the top coming down. There are things to play for all ages. We have been taking our little one here since she could walk.
Next to the children's area you will find a table football and table tennis. Never played, so have no idea where to get the balls or the bats, maybe ask in the cafe? or bring your own. The cafe prices are reasonable, not extortionate, like a waffle cone with Mr Whippy Ice Cream is £2.60.
The children's area is totally blocked off with security gates, so no dogs or other leashed animals allowed (watched a guy walking his Ferret, another guy walking his Cat). There is a large green area next to the play area so you have the option to move out there for a picnic or to play something else, giving kids an easy option and parents a chance to relax.
A nice find was a mini golf course, and next to that are some tennis courts. You can use the courts for free as long as you have the Tennis for Free membership for the whole family which is £21 in total. But the membership will allow you to use the 2 courts in the park, or in 3 other parks.
I think that's covers everything. Also, there are little trails you can walk up away form the path to find little hidden treasures. Have a walk find something new....
Read moreThis park used to be a lovely tended space in the middle of an urban area. There is an abundance of wildlife with herons nesting on the island in the middle of the lake. We've visited regularly for 8 years and enjoyed the walk around the lake, playing football on the field and visiting the extensive playground and the café. My only complaint was that the park could benefit from better toilet facilities.
On a recent visit, the first for several months, we were disappointed to find that there are now weeds growing up everywhere along the edge of the lake, with swathes of stinging nettles on the side of the bridge near the playground, and the whole place is looking unkempt. Talking to the friendly gardener who was trying to limit their ingress into the bridge itself, it seems that council budget cuts have affected the upkeep of the park and the maintenance team has been greatly reduced. What a shame, especially as there are plenty of other natural spaces in the local area (South Norwood country park, areas of Beckenham place park etc) set aside as...
Read moreIt's a great park, you can just enjoy a walk around the lake, sit down in the many different sections of the park and enjoy a variety of sceneries and feed the squirrels, ducks or carps; out if you are really brave, you can choose the playground area which is always a little noisier but has a cafe and most importantly the toilets! This park is well stabilised with a great variety of trees and many paths you can walk around. You can also find a rose garden, and when it's in bloom... the scent is to die for. And there is a section of the park just dedicated for dog walking too. And in the event of bad weather (like I've tested a few times!) there are two gazebo type buildings where you can hide and look at the ducks swimming around "laughing" at you. It is well accessible for mobility impared people and it has at least four different entrances where you can park around for free. Also at one of the entrances you can find an information office, it's not always open, but they are very helpful. We really like it, it's a great park to go to with our...
