Southwark Bridge may not be as famous as its neighbors Tower or London Bridge, but it offers a unique and elegant perspective of the Thames. The bridge’s sleek, green-painted steel arches and minimalist design give it a graceful, understated charm, making it a favorite for photographers and architecture enthusiasts. Walking across, you get fantastic views of both the historic City of London on one side and the vibrant South Bank on the other, including sights like Tate Modern, Shakespeare’s Globe, and The Shard.

It’s also a peaceful spot for a riverside stroll, especially compared to the busier neighboring bridges. The combination of scenic views, quiet walkways, and proximity to cultural landmarks makes Southwark Bridge a delightful stop while exploring central London.

This, one of London's least-known bridges, will reach its centenary in 2021.

For drivers it is very difficult to find, which is one reason for its under-utilisation by traffic. The best views of it can be gained from the walkway along the south side of the Thames or from the deck of a boat. It was nice to sail under it again on a recent cruise up and down the river from Gravesend.

A restoration was completed about 5 years ago and the five cast-iron arches supported by four stone granite piers look better than ever. The unusual turquoise-blue and green color is fairly attractive, there are some nice embellishments such as the lanterns, and there is a good view of St....

While wandering along the banks of the Thames, I found myself walking beneath Southwark Bridge, following the river from one bridge to the next. It was a wonderfully serene stretch of the city—calm, quiet, and perfect for a moment of pause. I came across this beautiful ceramic panel showing the original design of the bridge and a proposed redesign by Horace Jones from 1877. There’s something so lovely about standing by the water, hearing it ripple gently while the city hums in the background. A truly delightful place to clear one’s mind. 🧘🏻‍♀️💧
