Lovely museum. Helpful staff. Place is small but there is a lot there to see, a lot of local people stories, and story of the village/town (recordings, photos, personal notes and more), and those stories are very very interesting. Arrangement of display is tight -there is a lot to see, a lot from models of a ships to stuffed animals of impressing size, that kids, and people who want to "watch", rather than "penetrate" history will definitely find many interesting things to enjoy themselves. I've been there for the first time. I will definitely come back one day. Im foreign, I've been in couple museums, and this one i would place in top five, but thinking about size of the town and numbers... that would be top three. The place is also bringing local people together by organizing historic meetings (every week! I really really like the idea!). I've been visiting the museum during such a meeting. Im impressed. Frequency and the talks that i heard... I'm not a history expert but I've seen some England, cities as well as country side and coastal towns. It is really worth to pay the visit in the museum if you not only visiting Ilfracombe, but surrounding area. there is no problem with parking, there is one huge car park (paid) nearby, as well as few other interesting places, including nearby viewpoint located at the top of the...
Read moreWent here on Wednesday 2nd November. Didn't go in the museum, only the shop, or so I thought. I ,as some other reviews have said, crossed the imaginary devide between free entry to shop and the museum. I literally glaced across to the museum side of the shop and was challenged by a very rude lady accusing me of being in the museum and looking at the displays without paying. They really need to put some barrier up to prevent this from happening. Or even easier, get someone who is nicer behind the counter who doesn't feel it's ok to tell you off infront of your whole family. Definitely won't be...
Read moreIlfracombe museum is a small place that packs a far bigger punch than you might think, making it well worth a visit. It's main plus point is the amount of exhibits that are proper hands on. While it is mostly static displays that definitely don't want you touching things, there are enough things to get you involved (especially youngsters). You could easily spend hours in there, reading and studying exhibits but you could be in and out within an hour and not feel too rushed (especially if you are with children). And the best thing is, it's free! A donation is of course welcome...
