Situated on the outskirts of Plymouth the Plym Valley Railway runs for 1.5 miles to Plym Bridge, on the route of the former GWR line to Tavistock. The railway is run entirely by a friendly and enthusiastic group of volunteers - we were given a warm welcome on arrival and later on offered a visit to the cab of the train by the driver who talked us through the controls and how he came to volunteer on the railway. Marsh Mills, the base of the railway, has many points of interest including a museum, shop, cafe, book store and garden railway. Much of the rolling stock and engines that are being restored can be seen and staff members are always glad to answer any questions or talk through the many items being worked on. Although not a particularly long journey to the end of the line it is quite scenic, offering glimpses of the River Plym as it winds its way through the surrounding woods where deer are sometimes spotted. The railway provides an enjoyable way to get to Plym Bridge and can be a good alternative to the narrow multi-use path that can get congested in places as cyclists, walkers, dogs and kids negotiate their way around each other! Most of the services that run to Plym Bridge then return after a brief stop however you're not obliged to catch the same service back so can spend some time exploring the different trails around the area before catching a later train back to Marsh Mills. All in all, the PVR is an interesting, educational and enjoyable heritage railway that shows real signs of progress and enthusiasm, well worth a visit for kids and adults alike.

A lovely little steam train run which we had the enjoyment of the Christmas steam train this year, It's not too long and it's not too short and the staff seem very friendly and have the knowledge of the trains. It is also handy if you don't fancy walking through the wood to get to plymbridge from coypool. I highly recommend a visit here as it's a charity that is great at restoring old steam trains and diesel locomotives. Which can be preserved for years to come. So please support this little charity.

My wife had a drive a train experience booked on this railway. The staff, who I found out to be all 100% volunteers, were some of the most friendly and helpful staff to find on any preserved line. We had the most excellent day and it was well worth the travel down from South Yorkshire to spend a few hours there. If you are in and around Plymouth we recommend a visit, but check they are open first! A great day and a great railway, keep up the excellent work guys! We'll be back......

Lovely preserved railway with lots of history. The staff and volunteers are extremely friendly and helpful, really kind to the children and very helpful if you have difficulty with mobility. There is on going work being done to the line, which they share with visitors so that everyone has an opportunity to learn about their plans, there is a shop and toilet facilities. Parking is ample and close by. Really good value for money too. We will certainly be returning with the family and definitely...
