Rhuddlan Castle, located in Denbighshire, Wales, is a notable example of a late 13th-century fortress built by order of King Edward I. Construction began in 1277 as part of Edward's campaign to subdue Wales and secure English rule over the region. Strategically positioned on the banks of the River Clwyd, the castle's location allowed it to be supplied by ship, highlighting its importance in the network of fortifications known as Edward's "Iron Ring" of castles in North Wales. Designed by the master mason James of Saint George, Rhuddlan Castle features a concentric design with a strong inner ward protected by high curtain walls and massive round towers at each corner. The castle's unique diamond-shaped layout and its advanced defensive features, including a twin-towered gatehouse and a deep ditch, reflect the military architectural innovations of the period. The castle played a crucial role during the Welsh Wars and was involved in significant events, such as the Statute of Rhuddlan in 1284, which established English administrative control over Wales. Despite falling into disrepair after the Civil War in the 17th century, Rhuddlan Castle remains a well-preserved historical monument. Youtube: Pinned on Places Instagram: @PinnedonPlaces

ZERO star rating. Beautiful castle. Imagine your out exploring. you drive in to the car park. It's 4:30pm and you notice the sign saying 5pm closure. OK time to get a photo and make some enquiries. quote "we are closed"... but it gets better. rather than engaging with good customer service we get, " and the gates will be closing in 5 minutes" gob smacked wasn't the word. there was no, there's a nice pub there good views there we are open from 9 tomorrow. apologies I've got a family issue. no the elderly lady was totally unprofessional. I will be making a complain to the relevant tourist board area representatives. just a shame the lady didn't show the Beautiful Welsh manners that my good lady wife has. Needless to say, we didn't go back the next day. we went somewhere with good hospitality. wales tourist board. please review your staff here. thank you. update - 31/05 Senior Management reflect on a signage issue. please comment on your own customer service received. signage is a resource. customer service - hopefully things improve. no excuse for bad manners.

Beautiful Castle to visit. Theres not loads there or loads to do there, but it’s an interesting castle amongst the ones in North Wales. There’s a good-sized car park on site and a small gift shop with a few food items, but nothing like a cafe really. There is a small cafe on site which is separate, but it’s not open as the exact same times as the castle. The staff on site are lovely; friendly and informative 🙂 The castle has a little walk around it and up the turrets. A visit when reading all the signs and info boards would be 10-20 mins depending on how much you like to stop and stare at the STUNNING views around and over the Clywidian mountains. It’s got a nice little quirk as there’s history about the river/canal through the town. Go out the back and towards the little bridge to read the sign there. Cool touch, considering the nearly 750 year age! If this was helpful, give it a like 😉 Have a nice day!

We camped close by to the castle so took the opportunity to check it out. It is well maintained with modern stairways installed so you can get to the top of some of the towers. Informative notice boards are scattered throughout the site giving a really good history of the castle and the important roll it played in protecting the river and trade shipping routes of the day. There was an activity laid on for younger visitors in the form of a sand pit with archaeological treasures hidden within and a small gift shop serving coffee and over priced snacks. Totally worth the visit though just for the views but would recommend bringing your own picnic and flask. The site is also dog friendly so the whole family can get to enjoy the day 👍😉

It's an ok castle to visit - not a lot there though. It's cheap enough to get in and has a nice little gift shop - the staff in there are lovely. We went for an Easter egg quest and the kids had a great time running around. Only downside is it was over pretty quickly so we went on to the beach to enjoy the rest of the morning. Parking is really tight so you may struggle on a decent sized car. There is street parking as well I guess but there were cars everywhere so not a lot was available. We snagged a spot as people were leaving so we're lucky. There were dogs walking around so it's pet friendly but it was still really clean. The toilet was closed but the beach we went on to in Prestatyn had loads available for free.

Extensive and impressive remains of the castle built between 1277 and 1282 (at the then-astronomical cost of £9,613) on the orders of King Edward I of England following the First Welsh War, when the king was consolidating his conquest of Wales. Designed by master mason James of Saint George, it was the first of the revolutionary concentric, or ‘walls within walls’, castles built by Edward I. Wandering round the castle ruins gives a good impression of its former size and imposing grandeur. Ascend the east gatehouse to the battlements for panoramic views over the castle, village and surrounding countryside. Free parking for visitors. Small gift shop. Outside seating for refreshments. Worth a visit.
