We are English Heritage members. Best thing we ever forked out for, as Richmond Castle is one of the sites we can enter for free with our membership. And WOW this castle did not disappoint, the history behind this castle is fascinating, along with the culloden Tower on its grounds, you can walk up the castle tower to the top and the views are breathtaking. Richmond is a stunning town and you get to see it in its glory. This castle was an important place in the towns history this castle was mainly a residence back in its time as opposed to a fortres. When you have finished having a look in the castle go check out its stunning walled garden, when you find the bench overlooking the River Swale sit down and enjoy the scenery. There is also games set out on the grounds for you and your family to enjoy, we sat down and played dominos and our boys enjoyed the cricket set. A great place to enjoy a picnic and it's surroundings.
Parking is available in the town. The green zone is for parking discs that give you up to 2 hrs free parking, you can get a disc from any shop, the red zone is pay and display and you can park for longer periods.
Souvenir shop on site, cafes, bars and restaurants a plenty in the town if you want a good ol coffee shop I can reccomend granny's Kitchen for a great...
Read moreWe visited the Castle on Saturday 6th September and the Conquest re-enactment group there for the weekend! It brought everything to life, spanning from 1066 to 1266 of Norman life in Richmond Castle. We started with a brilliant talk about the sieges of castles over the years which was really informative and interesting, then a typical Norman soldier was dressed in front of us with all the various layers of clothing including the mail and pinafore over it. We then visited the surgeon/apothecary tent where we heard all about how pain, disease and injury was dealt with back then. There was a battle re-enactment showing the different outfits, armour and weapons spanning the 200 years of the castles battles. Really was an awesome sight. There was also a tent cooking up typical Norman dishes which was on offer to taste, just brilliant!! The Castle itself was fabulous to walk around, up into the keep tower and around the lovely garden with the amazing views all around. The only downside was - there was no on-site cafe but we were able to pop out to get sandwiches etc to bring back and eat inside the castle grounds on the many tables provided. All in all I would definitely recommend a visit to...
Read moreWe had a lovely visit to this castle! There was a school group in at the same time and despite this, we still had plenty of things to do whilst we looked at things they weren't also looking at.
The keep is fab to look at with a few good internal spaces to explore. Unfortunately we couldn't get to the top as they were doing something with their flag pole. We'd have loved to climb to the top, but this didn't mean we enjoyed it any less.
Plenty to look at and enjoy. The info boards were useful too, and gave just enough info to get you thinking about the long history of the place! We bought a guidebook which also helped clear things up when we had questions.
The permanent exhibition is a little smaller than others, but gives plenty of information. The shop is a little small and we wish they sold some food, but snacks helped us enjoy our visit.
We enjoyed walking round the cockpit garden and seeing the view upwards to the castle. It really puts it into perspective.
Nearby parking is a little tough. You can get 2 hours free with a disc but this doesn't go very far when you want some food and to explore! Plenty of local carparks nearby though, they're just a little walk...
