A venerable Richmond institution offering a selection of classic French dishes. The food generally tastes good but the overall experience needs a refresh.
The mussels starter was enjoyable, with the seafood served in a delicious white wine sauce. The camembert was less impressive: stodgy and with an unappealing balsamic glaze on top. The confit de canard was served with a satisfying jus and excellent dauphinoise potatoes, but the duck itself didn't have the crisped skin you typically see - suggesting it was cooked at too low a heat. Some of the presentation was poor, too, particularly on my partner's lemon sole special: veg all over the place.
It is a shame to see the menu has remained the same for many years - it's nice to pick from the classics, but a bit of imagination would be welcome! It was also disappointing to see that no French beers were available.
Service was friendly and prompt. Prices are reasonable but expensive enough to suggest some...
Read moreI'm not sure this place needs another review, but my wife and I so enjoyed eating here.
We were on a 350-mile trip all the way up the A1 from Cambridge to Edinburgh and needed somewhere for lunch at the halfway point. We couldn't have chosen better! It's just a few miles off the A1, and although parking is NOT easy, it's way, WAY better than anything you'll find on the A1.
I had a Croque Monsieur that probably contained close to the lethal amount of cheese and set me up for the week, whilst my wife had salmon fishcakes she described as the best she'd ever eaten. Since our usual holiday routine is "Head south through channel tunnel, Paris by lunchtime" not "Head north up A1, it's going to rain all week", the food here more than compensated for the poor weather.
Overall, great food in a wonderful building. Only the slightly off-hand service let this place down, but perhaps that makes it all the more - dare I say...
Read moreWe were a group of 10 friends who decided to dine at La Rustique whilst staying in a nearby lodge. Our decision was based upon the the price advertised in the menu and to make a break from going with the usual Chinese, Indian & italians that we usually opt for. Slightly set back from the road it offers a quite usual layout. The entrance is a covered courtyard with a large Parishian mural on the facing wall and a number of tables laid out for diners. We were seated upstairs, which was well presented and well laid out. We had pre ordered all our courses and were pleasantly surprised that nothing had been missed off when served. The food itself was amazingly good and the £20 odd pound we paid for the set menu was unbelievably excellent value. I myself had the calamari starter, seabass mains and for dessert the banana crepe. All served hot and the taste was excellent. Everyone was really pleased with every aspect of...
