Lovely part of history, as well as being very interesting and unique from an engineering point of view. Saltburn Cliff Lift is a funicular railway providing access to Saltburn Pier and the seafront from the town. The cliff lift is the oldest operating water-balance cliff lift in the United Kingdom. It was constructed between 1883 and 1884 to replace a vertical cliff hoist and improve access for tourists to the seafront and beach. The cliff lift has a height of 120 feet and a track length of 207 feet, resulting 71 per cent incline. A pair of 12-person cars, each fitted with a 240-imperial-gallon water tank, run on parallel standard gauge tracks; by removing or adding the water to their tanks, movement is achieved, regulated by a brakeman at the top. The lift opened in June 1884. The original cars have been replaced With aluminium counterparts and the top station restored, but little of the underlying mechanism has been changed since it was installed. The lift remains in regular use between March and October each year. It is one of Saltburn's most popular tourist...
Read moreThe Saltburn Cliff Tramway is one of the oldest operating water balanced cliff funicular in the world, opening in 1884. It provides scenic views of Saltburn beach and the coastline as it travels up the cliffside.
I visited the Saltburn Cliff Tramway today, but unfortunately, it remains closed after the significant electrical fire back in January.
The damage to the historic building has unfortunately turned out to be quite extensive, according to the updates. This means hopes of reopening for the Easter holidays have been dashed, as the repairs are more complex than initially hoped.
No new reopening date has been provided yet. When I asked staff for a timeline, they could not provide one due to the scale of work still needed after such a severe electrical incident.
It's a real shame that this much-loved local attraction remains out of use. I hope RCBC can complete the upgrades and restoration safely and soon. In the meantime, visitors miss out on experiencing this beautiful cliffside engineering marvel...

We like it and its always a fun way to travel especially with all your beach gear and children, however it is only a very short journey, 120ft in 55 seconds. So £6 for a family ticket down then £6 for a family ticket up, that's £12, way more than it costs to park the car for the day. For that reason I'd recommend £1 for adults/children, family tickets for £4, with pets free, but that's just me. However, it is a nice experience and a lovely memory, with vast views and it also does look pretty great watching the trams going up and down. The gents are always happy and polite and eager to chat about the history of the tram or just chat in general, so you don't mind paying a little extra. For future visits, I would have a happy hour, 50p travel between the hours of 1-2pm, off peak charges and also introduce ticket stubs for the children to hold and keep as momentos. Also my missus wouldn't let me ask if we identified as dogs would we only have...
