4/5* overall, lovely place to eat!
Set in a great location next to Saltburn Pier with great views of the sea and cliffs. We ate here for a family Christmas meal. The Christmas menu was varied and had veggie options too.
Food.
Salmon & prawn rouladè , Starter. Very tasty starter well presented and a good portion size, not too much but not too little.
Chicken parmo with chips & salad - Main. The chips were VERY nice it's just a shame they came in a small basket(as seems the practice by most places nowadays). A few more would've made the meal much better. Salad was a bit better than most places with walnuts, cheese and dressing. The parmo itself, if you'd have shown me a picture of it before I'd ordered, I probably wouldn't have got one. Visually it didn't look great however the flavour made up for it. Everything was a little thin compared to your average Teesside parmo(not comparing to takeaways, just restaraunts). If the chicken and bech were thicker and there was a little more cheese it'd have awesome potential. However the TASTE was lovely and the fact it was a little thinner than I'd have liked probably suited the fact we had 3 courses and drinks.
White chocolate Baileys Cheesecake - Dessert. Can't fault this at all, very generous serving size with a scoop of raspberry sorbet, a strawberry and a raspberry drizzle. The taste of Baileys was there but not overwhelming. Great way to finish off the meal!
Nut Roast - Vegetarian Option.
My girlfriend is a veggie and ordered the soup starter and nut roast main. The starter was a tasty mix of root veg with a decent serving of dipping bread. The main however, we weren't aware it had mushrooms in and we had no mushrooms on her order notes. The manager came over to notify us that it contained mushrooms in case it was an allergy. It isn't(just a string dislike) and we were told it was basically mixed in so she went ahead with the order. We only found 1 chunk of mushroom in it which was easily picked out and she ate the majority of it and I polished the rest off. I thought it was fairly flavoursome and not a bad veggie alternative at all! A small improvement would maybe to be to pre-check the orders(we'd placed the order maybe 4-5 weeks ahead) abd notify people of it a bit sooner so they could change. It didn't affect her meal too much as there were no big chunks of it and it didn't stand out in the taste. So no negativity, just maybe room for improvement there.
Staff. The staff were nothing but polite and efficient the whole night, can't fault them at all. It wasn't super busy but we regularly got asked how our meal was and were regularly asked if we were ok for drinks.
Price. Tomahawk is always on the pricier side and you get what you expect. I spent £40 on the set menu then £11.70 on 2 lager shandies(designated driver) which is a high priced pint for the area, but given the seaside setting with a view and quality of the atmosphere, building and food, I didn't mind.
Overall it was a lovely meal and a nice place to spend Christmas...
Read moreWe were in Saltburn for the weekend so made 3 bookings so we could try all the menus. First was dinner, plenty of staff, efficient service, good food. Lunch was next, we'd booked for 12pm and got there a little early but was shown to a table straight away. After a bit of faffing we were brought a menu but told we couldn't order until 12 when breakfast service finished and that the kitchen needed half hour to get turned round (no mention of this when the online booking was made), we even had to wait to place a drinks order. The service seemed a bit disorganised and waiting staff not a efficient as the evening before but once the food arrived we did enjoy it. After finishing our meal I ordered a liqueur coffee and after around 10 minutes asked about it only for the waiter to come back saying somebody should have informed me that they didn't have any of the liqueur and asked if I wanted something else, however, the moment had passed. We were then asked by one of the front of house team who'd taken my order and when told laughed in reaction then within minutes returned with said member of staff who apologised and said she'd put it through the till but her code had been playing up all morning, different story as what waiter had said. Lastly was breakfast, staff presence seemed even more thin on the ground and the poor lass who was on front of house was doing other jobs as well trying to keep service moving. The food was ok, not the best cooked breakfast but it matched the price. Few things myself and partner noted was that not all the waitresses had their hair tied up, one in particular had hair down to her waist swooshing about. We were sat near the entrance and saw a fair few folk walking in and making their way into the bar only to be called back to be asked if they had bookings and we thought a way to prevent this would have been to write something on the station where front of house staff were situated so if they were away from their post customers would know to wait to be seated. Another thing we noticed was the amount of walk ins that were being turned away when all the tables on the terrace were empty and several inside for the duration we were there, surely it would have been better for business if customers had been asked if they minded being seated outside as inside was fully booked or told they could sit inside but table was time limited due to prior booking. In regards to the terrace, where the pergola's are, if they were to have roofing on them it would increase the potential for customers being prepared to sit out. The restaurant is dog friendly on the terrace and at the 4 bar tables in the entrance, as the resort has a large number of 4 legged visitors it would make sense for the whole of the entrance area to be dog friendly in our view. We will visit again for sure and hopefully the longer the restaurant is open the minor issues will...
Read moreI'd been looking forward to going here for Sunday dinner for a long time. The main meal itself did not disappoint in flavour. It was probably the best I've eaten. However, a number of things spoiled our experience. After the plates came with the meat, it took a good 5 minutes for the veg sides to come so my dinner was getting cold. My daughter's dinner came with the wrong meat, but this was quickly rectified. I should add that we waited about an hour for the mains to arrive. Unfortunately, desserts took another 35 minutes to arrive, and the ice cream (which we'd ask to change) on one dish was incorrect. By this point, we'd been there for nearly 2.5 hours, and my 2 year old son was very restless, so we didn't bother asking it to be changed. (As an aside, I'd say the bombe dessert may look impressive - but it is not worth the money as it just melts into an overly sweet puddle that isn't at all pleasant to eat.)
It's worth pointing out that when you book online, the table slot was automatically put as 2 hours. This seems insufficient when it takes 2.5 hours to get a main and dessert.
So overall, lovely food, but it was a very expensive Sunday dinner (£96 including drinks, without the service charge), which was massively let down by the wait. I don't mind waiting for quality fresh food to be cooked, but this seemed an excessive wait, especially when the restaurant was only around a quarter full. I'd hate to imagine it at peak time. Also if the staff know there's a wait on food it's good practice to inform customers of this before taking orders. Despite this, the waiting staff were attentive and polite. They voluntarily removed the service charge without being asked when we complained about the wait for desserts.
I'd love to eat another meal there if I knew things had improved, I just don't know if it's worth the time when there's other good places in...
