Durham County Council had introduced parking fees a few weeks before we visited ( for my wife's birthday treat!). They were causing some confusion due to the information on the signs. £1 for up to an hour, £3 for 2 hours or more, up to 6pm...if my memory serves. Disabled drivers have to pay the same rate. There are a few Council car parks, but tickets are not transferable. We used 2 car parks that afternoon, it cost us £6. On the bright side it's cheaper than a lot of hospital car parks!
