This is a quaint collection of items from the Shaftesbury area crammed into a tiny building which, I guess might have been a private house back in the day. Very interesting, but a bit ambitious when you consider the town's enormous history. Alfred the Great, King Canute, Edward the Confessor, Priories, Abbeys....and on and on. Well, you see what I mean. The Museum is at the top of the famous Gold Hill of the Hovis advert, pinched in next door to a 15th century church (worth a look). From the moment you open the door you're greeted with a warm welcome by the volunteers who man the place. The building itself is perched on a hill with stunning views overlooking Shaftesbury. Inside are artefacts and comprehensive information from AD300 to the present day! Comprised of two floors, there is a lift and ramps throughout that make it extremely accessible. Wheelchair users need not worry about access to the upper floor. Access is available via a lift, which is operated by the volunteers. They are friendly, approachable and knowledgeable.
