I recently visited the Seaview Museum in Southampton, which was conveniently located near my hotel. On my way to the museum, I strolled through Watts Park and came across the Southampton Cenotaph, a First World War memorial designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens. When i arrived at the museum, I was expecting a traditional English architectural building, but the museum's modern design surprised me. There weren't many visitors, likely because it was a weekday. The Titanic exhibition was particularly impressive and well-presented. I recommend completing the full circuit, as some visitors miss the second half. The exhibition effectively brings the Titanic story to life by sharing the personal stories of individuals, highlighting the tragic loss of many lives, particularly among the crew who were residents of Southampton. There are also moving oral accounts from survivors. One of the highlights for me was the audio re-enactment of parts of the inquiry following the disaster, played in an old courtroom—appropriate since the museum is housed in the former courthouse. Besides the Titanic exhibition, the museum offers a quick overview of Southampton's history from Roman times and beyond, featuring artifacts from various archaeological finds. I spent at least a couple of hours exploring the museum and found it to be a deeply engaging experience.

A fantastic museum, housed in a former police station and magistrates’ court. The toilets on the ground floor are contained within the former holding cells. On the upper floor is an exhibit detailing the life, before and after, of the crew onboard RMS Titanic. Most of the crew of Titanic stayed in Southampton in days running up to her maiden voyage and many of those were born or lived in Southampton. We’re used to hearing the passengers side of the story, so to focus on the crew’s story was eye opening. Some of the exhibits are humbling and thought provoking - for instance the telegram letting a family member know their loved one was not found and is presumed dead. Right from the beginning of the exhibit, you are introduced to several individuals, including captain Smith, who you follow through the exhibit as you find out about their life and their ultimate fate. The exhibition on the Titanic finishes in the former courtroom where you can hear a dramatic video of the inquiry into the sinking. There is another smaller exhibit which is also interesting and a cafe to get drinks and a snack. If you are in Southampton, I’d consider a visit.

As an avid fan of the titanic this was one of the must do activities during my 3 day stay. On my arrival I was greeted and given the run down with the system against covid very well maintained mannerisms with a a bottle of hand sanitiser every so often dotted about the place and markers clearly showing which way to go round. The exhibits themselves were very informative and interesting and in some cases interactive ones being very insightful. Some of the amazing pieces of the titanic exhibit is a deck chair from the sister ship Olympic and the pocket watch recovered. There was also a model that was very keen to detail. I found myself getting lost into the vast history and artifacts. There was another exhibt that was interesting with some models of boats and a humongous model of the Queen Mary which is a sight to behold due to level of detail and size. The gift shop had a variety of items avalible for purchase some moderately priced. Highly recommend for those who are interested in the history behind the titanic.

Southamptons main museum which is made up of 3 sections - the story of the Titanic (although built in Belfast the ship set off on its disastrous maiden voyage from Southampton and most of the crew were from the City), the history of the City, and Southampton Stories (which is a bit of a muddle and could have been incorporated into the history section. By far the best section is the Titanic story. The recordings of survivors describing the sinking and the map showing how many homes in the city lost people are quite moving (in one street every home was affected). The dramatisation of the post-sinking enquiry is also good. The museum is in the Civic Centre along with the excellent Art Gallery. Recommended if mainly for the Titanic section. The museum is in a part of the building which used to be courts and a police station. There are panels cut in the museum ceiling allowing a glimpse of the lovely court ceiling and the cells are now the loos.
