Modest though pleasant free local art gallery above the central library. You climb the stairs to a large airy space with a souvenir shop. In this space there are some modern works by local artists. To the right are a series of rooms, the first of which has some useful paintings of Southampton through the ages, with some dubious photographs of waste land and graffiti at the end. There is a pleasant room with paintings of sailing ships, and a fine wood panelled room with a series of paintings by the Pre-Raphaelite Edward Burne-Jones on the Perseus myth. The Perseus room is probably the gallery's most important collection. On the left are a series of rooms which appear to be used for temporary exhibitions. On our visit the exhibition was of Louise Bourgeois, which we enjoyed.
