A beautiful sand beach, that goes on for some time. When we visited the tide was extremely high. But I was told by a lovely local that when the tide goes out, it is an excellent place for shark teeth spotting. There is some paid parking just south and inland of this marker.
THE JEWEL OF THE BEACH.
It has to be Claire and her wonderful refreshment stand. I'm mostly writing this review because she doesn't have a google pin as of right now. Claire was wonderfully bubbly and sweet, much like the treats that she served. She offers a selection of donuts, ice cream, iced and warm coffees, soft drinks that are mixed there, rather than being pre-bottled or canned.
All for very fair prices. We got 5 of the most gobsmackingly delicious donuts we've ever had from a beach, for only £4.50! The fairest price for donuts I've seen on any coastline. With most drinks and liquid refreshments coming to £3 or less, this type of independent business is EXACTLY what you keep your eye out for when on holiday.
and if you don't have to travel far for this, as a local, count your lucky stars, because I'd have Claire's sweets and treats for breakfast everyday! Please do support her and her business, she...
Read moreWalton-on-the-Naze; the word ‘Naze’ derives from Old English ‘næss’ or ‘ness’, meaning a promontory, or headland’. I always think of ‘naze’ as meaning ‘nose’ - same difference. Daniel Defoe, visiting Walton before us, in 1722, referred to is as it ‘Walton under the Nase’.
Walton boasts a fine Pier. The first version was built in 1830. And is one of the earliest in the country. The pier was damaged in a January storm in 1871. They built another and that did not last long either.
In 1895, the Walton-on-the-Naze hotel and pier company (then owners what was left) opened a replacement pier 500 feet long and with several extensions it became the third longest in the UK. With this makeover they included an electric tramway to take passengers from steamers to the very end of the pier. This was in use until 1935. In 1945 a massive fire damaged the pier. A diesel locomotive replaced the tram – this too was taken out of service in the ‘70’s. So, now we all walk. And this is was lovely in...
Read moreThe beach is second best to Frinton, the thing it has extra is the pier and amusements. It's good fun and the kids love it. Buy a wrist band for all day rather than pay as you go as it works put A LOT cheaper! They can go on as many rides as they wish and as many times as they wish. The latté in the pub inside is nice and they also have a small bowling alley inside. Once you've walked through the amusements there is the outside to the pier and its nice to sit in the summer looking out into the ocean. The restaurant at the very end does the usual fish and chips, nuggets, burgers, sandwiches, all day breakfast etc. The only downfall to Walton is the parking; the parking at the front where mini crazy golf is and all other outside amusements is very hard to get a space as so packed - so get there early to avoid the stress of finding a space! Alternatively you can park in one of the pay and displays a 5-8 minute walk from the pier, again they do also get busy! Great, fun day out...
