We’ve visited the St James Tavern several times, both for romantic dinners and more casual lunches with family and friends, and it never disappoints. The food is consistently excellent – the Scotch eggs are among the best I’ve had in years, and the Sunday roasts are outstanding.
Service is always personable and welcoming, whether it’s your first visit or you’re a regular. The atmosphere adapts beautifully: quiet and intimate at times, livelier when there’s entertainment. Live music is a regular feature, and it’s worth checking their website for events and offers (pie night is a favourite!).
The bar is impressively stocked, with a wide range of drinks thanks to its free house status, including a great selection of local beers and ales. In addition to the cosy indoor dining and bar areas, there’s also a courtyard accessible from the bar or street – perfect for enjoying some sunshine with a drink and a good book.
Overall, the St James Tavern is a place you’ll want to return to again and again. Whether it’s for a relaxed evening meal, Sunday lunch, drinks with friends, a quiet catch-up, or a lively night of music, it has something...
Read moreNot sure why every pub "The Small pub" group takes over tends to turn into an expensive "eatery", and when it doesnt work for them they just move on and leave a collapsed business!. Sjt is expensive , roasts gone from £12 to £17, beer £5.50 average, thats if your lucky to find the chef in house and not on a birthday/weekend away or the staff struggling to cope with demand! Locals frowned upon asking for another drink as staff prefer to look at laptops facing the wall away from the bar. Small toilets, dingy corners and old decor. Locally try the Fulflood Arms for real beer, The Railway inn for real music, the Jolly Farmer for meal value or city center for authentic service. Closed on mondays and lunchtimes during week, no parking and due to health and safety reasons no candles or real fires. Apart from that, if you like Rick Astley as background music and falling over black labradors spralled all over the...
Read moreI had the pleasure of having Christmas Dinner here back in 2019 and I still rave about it today to anyone who will listen. I travelled from Wales to Winchester with a family group (you can't beat a girly weekend Christmas shopping trip) and we were lucky enough to book a table here for Christmas dinner. The Tavern is cosy without feeling claustrophobic, and was warm and inviting. The staff on duty were brilliant and were incredibly helpful and friendly. The food was just amazing (I had the slow cooked beef and it was incredible so thank you to the chef and kitchen staff) and there was a large range of drinks available. The young girl behind the bar made a top notch whiskey sour which may have resulted in me waking up with a hangover the next day (but totally worth it). Definitely worth a visit if you're in the area.Unfortunately covid stopped our annual shopping trip last year but we're hoping for...
