Every area that has Route 66 passing through it is a little different, and this is how it should be. This section seems to pass through what was downtown Amerillo in the 40s and 50s. Kind of what I spent my early years in up in up north. The buildings are all maintained as original, which is good to see. It has a very heavy concentration of bars and a few restaurants. It appears the area is self funding which is nice to see as the buildings can be maintained and not run down as some areas of Route 66 have. From what we could see, it is a safe area, and if you are looking for a drink, it could be a fun experience. It's definitely worth seeing. I went to Amarillo Route66 after seeing it listed in the local attractions and recalling the stories from her trip. I’m sure it looks completely different than when she went, but it was a must see before heading back home. It was later, around 7:00 pm and most shops were closed but I did manage to get some pics from the journey! The wall art on various buildings is pretty cool...
Read moreDrove through Amarillo and specifically stopped here because I'd read there were cute shops and artsy places and fun eating places, but we drove up and down the street a couple of times, and nothing was going on. Maybe it was the time of day because it was the middle of the day. Maybe it was mainly because of Covid and nothing seemed to be open, but I was surprised and disappointed. We wanted to support this area, and that night they were supposed to get back to doing the cruising up and down the street, but when we were there, there was nothing to do.
