I am a long-time Huron River paddler and Ann Arbor fan. We had family visiting from North Carolina for a day and thought a paddle from Argo to Gallup would be the perfect way to bring everyone together. One member in our group has a dissability (prosthetic leg), so I called a head of time to make sure that we could canoe the river. We were assured the stretch from Argo to Gallup was open and planned our whole day around it. As soon as I arrived, we were told that we could not canoe the river (I have done this in my own canoe prior). I clarified to staff that he did not feel comfortable in a kayak, but that we had no other choice. We found a sit-in at the launch that would work for him, and paid for 4 tandem kayaks, as this was the only choice given. AFTER paying, as we were boarding the kayaks, we were told that he would have to use a sit-on-top. They pulled one out of the water for him, as I was helping other members of the family board, and had him sit on ot on dry land to test. This model of kayak has a keel and is extremely unstable ON LAND. No one thought to suggest that he take an attempt in flat water. He immediately felt self-conscious and fearful after this trial and backed out of the whole deal, before I noticed what was going on. Now, I understand that the staff is young, but no one, including the manager tried to offer a reasonable solution or alternative. Before I knew it, they were leaving our family event, specifically planned for them in mind, because they felt too embarrassed to participate due to their physical limitation. No one thought to offer him a tube, or encourage any alternative. I was dissheartened for the entire paddle, as it was too late for the rest of the family to back out, and our reason for doing this was completely thrown off. The worst is after the paddle, he had to pick us up and ask if he could have done the float. Of course he could have, but staffing needs a major overhaul to comprehend how to deal with anything out of the norm. I could picture this at a Ma and Pa livery in Cadillac, or Grayling or some boon-dock town, but this is the City of ANN ARBOR, who prides themselves in...
Read moreReseveration numbers 26269233 and 26255331 for April 17-May 28 Gallup Boat Reservation-3.7 Mile Trip 12:00 PM Gallup 3.7-Mile River Trip - 5/22/21 12 PM 3.7 Mile Trip-Gallup ($10.00). I had 2 reservations booked under my account in early April for my large group of 9. I arrive yesterday and I am told I do not have a reservation peroid. I was questioned and told I booked incorrectly. By the end of my experience, it had appeared like other people were going through my same booking error. The reservation also stated Go to the Gallup Park Livery to rent your boats and start this river trip (Argo is closed). This was incorrect according to staff. A lot of mess delayed my trip. We get to the vans to finally take us to Argo despite what my reservation says. The van staff tell the boat rental staff at the building where you rent your boat and take off that these 2 groups have a reservation pre paid, boats have been paid, please move them to the front of the line and the staff renting the boats still insisted we needed to stand in line and wait once again. Disappointed I spent time and money for mutiple reservations that were truly not met. I understand with the pandemic things have changed and I attempted to accommodate for that with my reservations but it failed as we had to wait a decent amount of time due to being a large group. The kayak experience, van and boat service staff at the docks were pleasant and it pained me these employees could not be tipped as they provided the best service of my trip. 2nd time I've been to this location. Likely to return hoping this was just a fluke in the online system with...
Read moremuch of the tubing experience was nice. the young man at check-in was not all that helpful answering questions so I had to find my own way for much of my argo to gallup park tubing experience. This included not knowing that I was to have money on me to pay for the shuttle at gallup when I would not have thought to bring my wallet on a 3 mile tubing trip when we are going to get wet. I was left dumbfounded and scrambling trying to pay for a shuttle pass to argo. I was able to remember my debit card number luckily and have it manually typed in the card machine. When I arrived by tube to gallup park to finish my ride there were docks to climb out of the water onto. I was coming off a tube and did not have anything to push off of. I was not able to pull myself up onto the dock and the employees all stood around looking at me. Finally one said they might be able to find a ladder? I was able to find a broken slanted area to belly flop onto. There really needs too be a better way to exit the water and the employees need to offer more assistance. I am average size and strength and I image many others could not get out of the water as well. Was I going to swim the 3 miles back to argo while the young employees discussed their plans for...
