Do you want to waste your money and time? Then definitely go here. I received a HORRIBLY UNEVEN haircut that was noticeably bad. I asked a hairdresser from another salon to take this video before I they give me a proper haircut. I'm doubtful whether the male hairdresser even has a license, as there's only one registered at this location for both a male and a female hairdresser.
I'm quite easy going with my haircut and I’ve never complained about a haircut—even when one hairdresser accidentally slightly burnt my bangs when I was 19. This time, I had my 'first' haircut by the male hairdresser and couldn’t communicate with him due to a language barrier. (I don't think it should be any matter if he did fair enough job.) Instead, I showed him a picture as the female hairdresser suggested. He began by cutting several inches off at once, and I gave up trying to get the haircut I wanted, and started talking to him with body language to explain the length and style I wanted. His handling was rough, pushing my head around and even poking my neck with the scissors. I didn’t complain about this because I knew he couldn't understand me, but it was beyond anything you’d expect from a professional hairdresser. He didn’t seem to acknowledge the issues or apologize.
Eventually, I had to ask the female hairdresser for 'rescue' because I was not only unhappy with the haircut but also worried about potential injury. Once he finished, my hair looked unbelievably bad, and the woman had to 'fix' it. But right after she finished fixing it, I found uneven part right away and asked her to make it even. She cut it off without the gown, and all the little hairs got into my cloth. She didn't even brush the mess at all so I did it on my own. I ended up spending DOUBLE THE TIME and STILL paid the same amount of fee ($28) without any apology.
When I got home and checked my hair again, it was as bad as a botched haircut in a viral video—horribly uneven with chunky layers. I’ve asked for the same hairstyle for the last seven years, regardless of the salon, and this was the first time I received such a disappointing result. For the five days until I went to another salon to fix it, everyone noticed how uneven my hair was.
I finally went back to ask for a refund. Initially, she insisted she couldn't give a 100% refund, but when I showed her how uneven it was, she got me 100%. She never apologized; instead, she became so upset with me and said that she hoped it would be my last visit there. For sure, I will NEVER EVER WASTE MY TIME AND MONEY, and get upset and embarrassed at this place again, especially when there’s a cheaper ($26), more professional salon just a minute away, next to Uni Tea. This is the worst experience I've had ever since I arrived...
Read moreI have had a good haircut here before with June who is great, but my next experience with the other hairdresser, who was an older woman, was the first time I've ever had such a bad experience with any haircut in my life.
I initially came in for a trim for my wolfcut, maybe a photo that was closest to what I wanted if she were confused, ended up with a blunt chin-length bob. When I spoke up, the hairdresser got mad at me saying I asked for shoulder length hair, which is what my hair originally was before she cut it. It was very far from what I wanted or showed, and she didn't communicate with me on what she was planning on doing or double checking with me. Language barrier could've been a thing, but if she was unsure I would've preferred waiting for someone else or being turned away, or even asking me to better explain myself. June spent the next 30 minutes trying to fix it and luckily I had back-up photos of shorter hairstyles, but I walked away feeling baffled by my experience and missing my old long hair that I had been growing out for a year. I felt frustrated that I paid $30 just to not get the trim I had originally wanted, and instead got unwarranted attitude from staff and a whole new pixie cut that I struggled to salvage on the spot.
If you come here and are particular about your hair and modern hairstyles, ask for June, she's a great communicator and is very knowledgeable. Business-wise, I don't understand why they don't hire better hairstylists when the price keeps rising. Last year it was $25 for a women's cut, now it's $28 not including tip for a cut that wasn't worth it on my end nor what I...
Read moreNew Age Salon gave me the best new hairstyle of my life--and quickly! Highly recommend.
Whenever I've shown the same picture of a wavy haircut to other hairdressers around the U.S. and Asia, they've always questioned me and say I need to use a hair curler to achieve that hairstyle, but the owner took one look at the picture, understood the assignment, and finished it in 15 minutes--with a new flair that I never thought possible. I've usually walked out of hair salons with the same hairstyle, but she took that hairstyle to the next level. It's beautiful! The conversation was great, too.) :)
New Age will be my go-to hairdresser during my 2-3 years in Ann Arbor, as it seems to be for lots of Asian residents and students of all ages here!
(For reference, I'm an East Asian woman...
